Box Score Danbury, Conn. - Sophomore Anthony Nejame (Danbury, Conn.)
scored five goals, including the game-winner in overtime, to lead
the Western Connecticut State University Colonial men's
lacrosse team to a 12-11 victory over the visiting Trinity
College Bantams this afternoon at the Westside Athletic
Complex.
Scoring for Trinity were sophomore Jack Castelli (Huntington,
N.Y.), senior tri-captain Rob Nogueras (Parkland, Fla.), and
junior Chase Growney (Berwyn, Pa.) who each scored three
goals. Senior tri-captain Nick Shaheen (Williamsburg, Mass.)
and sophomore James O'Connell (Middleton, Mass.) each added
one goal. Also scoring for Western were junior Ryan Foster
(Ledyard, Conn.) with three goals, freshman John Foristall
(Danbury, Conn.) with two goals, and sophomore Nick Foley (Walpole,
Mass.) and freshman Nate Wilson (Norwich, Conn.) who each scored
once. Foristall led the Colonials with three assists.
Trinity wasted little time getting on the clock, winning the
opening faceoff and scoring in the game's first five seconds
when Nogueras scored on a pass from sophomore midfielder Tim
Reichert (Williston, Vt.). Twenty seconds later, Trinity
scored again to take a 2-0 lead before a minute had been played
when Shaheen scored an unassisted goal. Western Connecticut
then scored six unanswered goals, starting with a goal by Nejame,
assisted by Foster, at the 10:20 mark. Foristall then tied
the game at 9:44 and Foster gave the Colonials their first lead at
6:15. Goals by Najame, Foley, and another by Foster lifted
Western to a 6-2 lead after one quarter of play.
The second quarter was all Trinity, as the Bantams scored five
unanswered goals to take a 7-6 lead at the half. Growney
scored the first and the last goals of the period, while Castelli
scored twice and assisted on two other talles in the second. The
Colonials reclaimed the lead in the third quarter when Nejame
scored twice in the opening four minutes, both times on assists
from Foristall. O'Connell and Nogueras scored
back-to-back to give Trinity a 9-8 lead before Foristall
took a turn scoring on a pass from Nejame, to even things at
9-9. Castelli closed out the third-quarter scoring for a 10-9
Bantam lead heading into the fourth.
Wilson scored in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter for
Western Connecticut to tie the score at 10-all. Foster then
scored an unassisted goal midway through the period for an 11-10
Western lead, but Growney's goal with 5:20 remaining evened
the score at 11-11 and would be the final tally of
regulation. The overtime period opened with Trinity
controlling action in the Western Connecticut end for the
first three minutes, but the Colonials caused a turnover
and raced down the field looking for a chance to end the
game. Freshman Spencer Penoro (Orange, Conn.) found Nejame in
front of the Trinity goal and Nejame quickly deposited the
game-winner to give the Colonials the 12-11 victory.
Sophomore Riley Cahill (South Glastonbury, Conn.) made 11 saves for
the Bantams.
