Box Score Hartford, Conn. – Freshman Ali Doswell (Richmond, Va.) had
22 points, making five of nine attempts from three-point range,
eight rebounds, and three blocks to lead the visiting Amherst
College Lord Jeffs to a 76-67 victory over the Trinity College
Bantams in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC)
women's basketball action this afternoon at Oosting
Gymnasium. Trinity drops to 10-7 overall and 3-2 in the
NESCAC with its second loss in a row, while the No. 8-ranked Lord
Jeffs improve to 16-2 overall and 4-1 in the league with their
second straight win.
Amherst scored the final eight points of the
first half to turn a 31-30 lead with 1:48 left into a 39-30
halftime advantage, and led by as least six points the rest of the
way. Trinity started strong, opening up a9-4 lead 4:18 into
the game after a layup and a free throw by senior Taylor Murtaugh
(Bronx, N.Y.). Amherst took a 24-18 lead at the 6:29 mark on
a three-pointer by freshman Hannah Peterson (Cambridge, Mass.), but
an 8-0 Bantam run that included four points by sophomore center
Mackenzie Griffin (Stamford, Conn.) gave Trinity a 26-24 lead with
3:43 on the clock. Amherst went back ahead by three, 31-28,
on a trey by Doswell, and Griffin pulled Trinity to within a point
with a pair of free throws moments later. Rookie guard Jaimie
Renner (Newton, Mass.) started the Lord Jeff run with a traditional
three-point play, followed by Doswell's third three-pointer
of the first half, and a pair from the foul line by sophomore guard
Cheyenne Pritchard (Ames, Iowa). Doswell led all scorers with
11 points at intermission, while Griffin had nine points and 11
rebounds, and Murtaugh added 11 points.
The Bantams fought their way back from a
13-point deficit in the second half, and trailed, 60-54 with 5:25
remaining in the game after a pair of free throws by senior forward
Hannah Brickley (Melrose, Mass.). Doswell made another long
ball for a 65-56 Amherst lead, but a Brickley layup with 1:47 left
made the score, 68-622, with just under two minutes left to
play. Amherst made seven of free throws in the final minute
to preserve the win.
Brickley totaled team-high 22 points and
added nine rebounds, while Murtaugh finished with 19 points and
four rebounds, Griffin had 11 points and a game-high 13 boards, and
senior Moriah Sweeney (Ramsey, N.J.) contributed six rebounds and
five assists. Trinity shot just 33.8 percent from the field
and attempted just two three-pointers, making one, while Amherst
made eight three-pointers in 19 tries. Trinity finished with
a 46-38 edge on the glass. Amherst junior forward Savannah
Holness (Middlebury, Conn.) added 16 points, six rebounds, and two
blocks, while Pritchard made all 12 of her free throws for 15
points to go with four steals, and Renner added 10 points and a
team-high five assists.
