Men's Soccer Scores 2-1 NESCAC Win on the Road

Box Score

Middletown, Conn. – The Trinity College men's soccer team won its second straight game, topping Wesleyan, 2-1, on the road in wet and windy conditions in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) action on Thursday night. With the win, the Bantams snapped a three-game unbeaten streak in conference play to improve to 7-4-2 on the year and 2-4-2 in league play, while the Cardinals move to 7-4-2 overall and 5-3-0 in conference tilts. The win was the first for Trinity against Wesleyan since 2011.

Senior co-captain Tim Shea (Somerset, Mass.) scored the game winner in the 54th minute as sophomore forward Cody Savonen (Orleans, Mass.) picked up the assist. At the time, Shea's team-leading seventh tally gave the Bantams a 2-0 lead. The game winner was the second of the year for Shea and gave Trinity its second league win of the year.

Savonen opened the scoring in the 43rd minute to give Trinity a 1-0 lead late in the first half. Savonen's seventh goal of the year (which ties Shea for the team lead) came off a nice feed from junior midfielder Malcom Joseph (Sudbury, Mass.). The assist was Joseph's second of the season as Trinity took a 1-0 lead into the break.

After Shea gave Trinity a 2-0 lead in the second half, Matt Lynch scored on a header for Wesleyan in the 63rd minute to make it a one-goal game. Down the stretch, first-year goalkeeper Mateo Zabala (Paterson, N.J.) turned aside the shots all the faced shots to preserve the Bantams win.

In total, Zabala made eight saves to earn his fourth win of the season for Trinity. On the opposite end, Jack Katkavich was the tough luck loser allowing two goals and making three saves, while Emmett McConnell made a pair of saves for the Cardinals.

Wesleyan held a 17-14 advantage in shots and the Cardinals took five corner to the Bantams four.
Trinity returns to action this Saturday, Oct. 25, with its final home game of the regular season as Connecticut College comes to Hartford in NESCAC action. The game this weekend is part of Inauguration and Family Weekend at Trinity as the contest gets underway at 1:30 p.m.
