Men's Soccer Falls at Amherst, 4-3, in Season Finale

Box Score

Amherst, Mass. – The Trinity College men's soccer team ended the 2014 season with a 4-3 defeat at Amherst in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) action on Wednesday afternoon at Hitchcock Field. The Lord Jeffs scored a trio of first half goals en route to the victory to improve to 11-1-3 on the year and 7-1-2 in league action, while the Bantams dropped their third straight to finish 7-7-2 overall and 2-7-2 in conference tilts.

Four different players scored for Amherst as the hosts jumped out to an early, 3-1, lead in first half and held off a charging Trinity squad late in the contest. Bantams sophomore midfielder Tobias Gimand (Fairfield, Conn.) recorded his first multi-goal game of the season to lead the Trinity offensive attack. The Lord Jeffs were led by Gabriel Wirz with two assists and Andrew Orozco registered a goal and an assist.

Amherst goalkeeper Thomas Bull turned aside three shots to pick up the win, while Trinity senior netminder Jason Katz (Middleton, Mass.) made seven saves in a losing effort.

The Lord Jeffs opened the scoring just over 15 minutes into play as Nico Pascual-Leone converted a rebound off a shot by Wirz. Pacual-Leone fired a shot just under the crossbar past a diving Katz. Trinity knotted the score at one ten minutes later as senior co-captain Timothy Shea (Somerset, Mass.) scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season. Bantams first-year midfielder Riley Cassidy (Huntington, N.Y.) kept the ball inbounds on the right side of the field and played a ball to sophomore forward Cody Savonen (Orleans, Mass.) who served a ball that Shea corralled and finished just inside the right-hand post. Late in the first half, Amherst scored a pair of goals three minutes apart to take a 3-1 advantage into halftime.

Less than five minutes into the second half, Greg Singer gave the Lord Jeffs a three-goal advantage as he fired a shot high near the crossbar the deflected off Katz' outstretched hands and into the net. In the 65th minute, Gimand netted his first goal of the day to bring the Bantams within two as sophomore midfielder Mike Cooke (Boston, Mass.) picked up the assist. With under a minute remaining in regulation, Gimand struck again to pull Trinity within one at 4-3 as first-year midfielder Alex Bednarek (Kensington, Conn.) recorded his first collegiate point with an assist.

Trinity was able to gain possession on the Amherst side of the field with under 30 seconds left in the game, but they were unable to get a shot off as the Lord Jeffs held on for the win.

Amherst held a 14-9 advantage in shots and the Bantams took 10 corners to the Lord Jeffs nine.

The contest marked the final collegiate contest for Trinity seniors Timothy Shea, co-captain Kyle Johnston (Sagamore Beach, Mass.), Jason Katz and Max Oppenheimer (Plymouth, Minn.)
