Box Score Hartford, Conn. – Senior forward Conor Coveney (Hingham,
Mass.) and freshman forward Tyler Whitney (Wakefield, Mass.) had
two goals and one assist apiece to lead the Trinity College Bantams
to a 9-1 victory over the visiting University of
Massachusetts-Dartmouth Corsairs in men's ice hockey action
this afternoon at Williams Rink in the Koeppel Community Sports
Center. Trinity, ranked No. 8 nationally, improves to 4-0-1
and will host the No. 10-ranked Mass.-Boston Beacons tomorrow
afternoon at 3 p.m. The Corsairs fall to 1-5-2 with their
second setback in a row.
Trinity led, 3-1, after the first period, receiving goals from
rookies Anthony Sabitsky (Sicklerville, N.J.), Whitney, and Bradley
Buvinow (Turnersville, N.J.) with Buvinow earning the first goal of
his collegiate career 14:52 into the frame to give the Bantams the
3-1 lead. Sabitsky scored 1:09 into the game from senior
forward Jackson Brewer (Newton, Mass.) and junior forward Michael
Hawkrigg (Toronto Ontario), and Whitney tallied the game-winner
just 10 seconds later from first-year defenseman Michael Menter
(Lake George, N.Y.). Mass.-Dartmouth junior forward Mike
Restuccia (Malden, Mass.) cut the Trinity lead in half at 2-1 from
Shaun Walters (Plymouth, Mich.) 3:10 into the first, as the lone
Corsair goal came on the first of just five shots in the period for
the visitors.
Trinity found the back of the net five times in the second
stanza, as Coveney started things with a goal 2:46 after the first
break, and tallied the final marker of the middle frame with 54
seconds left. Sabitsky netted his second of the game midway
through the third period for the only goal after the second
intermission.
Trinity was penalized just once and not until the last period,
and the Bantams scored on two of their three power plays.
Freshman Alex Morin (St. Hubert, Quebec) made 21 saves in his
collegiate debut in the goal for Trinity. Sophomore Nic
Wackerly (Altadena, Calif.) had 45 saves and classmate J.J.
Solloway (Derry, N.H.) stopped all 16 shots he faced in the third
period for the Corsairs, as Trinity tied a school record with 70
shots on goal previously achieved against Iona in 1975 and against
Quinnipiac in 1991.
