Box Score Utica, N.Y. – The No. 11 ranked Trinity College men's hockey team remained unbeaten on the road this season, topping Utica, 1-0, on Friday evening in non-conference play at the Utica Memorial Auditorium. With the win, the Bantams improve to 5-1-1 on the year and the Pioneers fall to 3-5-2 with the defeat.
Trinity junior goaltender Nathaniel Heilbron (W. Vancouver, British Columbia) stopped all 33 shots he faced to record his first career shutout for the Bantams. He was tested early, making point blank saves on two shots in the first ten minutes of the contest. With 6:23 left in the opening period, Utica was whistled for an elbowing penalty and on the ensuing power play the Bantams took advantage to open the scoring courtesy of a Sean Orlando (Ivyland, Pa.) tally. Senior tri-captain Michael Flynn (Cheshire, Conn.) started the play from the point with a pass to Michael Hawkrigg (Toronto, Ontario) who played the puck to Orlando just inside the left circle where he fired a shot that beat Utica netminder Dylan Wells.
Just over four and a half minutes into the second period, Utica was called for a trip and the Bantams were unable to take advantage as the Pioneers successfully killed the penalty. Later in the period, Utica had an odd-man rush and Helibron once again stood his ground to keep the Bantams ahead by a goal. With seven minutes left in the second stanza, the Bantams special teams performed well again as Trinity killed off a pair of penalties while surrendering just two shots on goal to enter the final period with a 1-0 edge.
Four minutes into the third, senior tri-captain Jackson Brewer (Weston, Mass.) had a scoring chance as linemate Elie Vered (Ottawa, Ontario) picked off a pass and played the puck over to Brewer whose shot was stopped with the glove by Wells. Just over midway through the final stanza, the Bantams special teams came up big as they killed off a hooking penalty thanks to a trio of saves by Heilbron.
With seven minutes remaining the contest, Utica was called for a five-minute major and game misconduct after a high blindside hit. During that stretch, the first scoring opportunity came as Utica had a breakaway, but Heilbron made a beautiful glove save sliding right to left. With under a minute remaining and a faceoff in the Trinity zone, the Pioneers pulled their goalie for an extra skater. Off the faceoff, Utica fired a shot from the point that deflected off the post. Following the scare, the Bantams would hold on for the victory.
Trinity wraps up a weekend of action in the Empire State on Saturday, Dec. 6, with a non-conference clash with Hobart at 4:00 p.m.
