Box Score Geneva, N.Y. – Junior forward Elie Vered (Ottawa, Ontario) scored two goals, including the game winner, and added two assists to lead the No. 11 Trinity College men's hockey team past Hobart, 4-3 on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at "The Cooler" Geneva Sports Complex. With the win, the Bantams improve to 6-1-1 overall, while the Statesmen fell to 5-4-0 on the year.
With the score tied at three and under 10 minutes remaining in regulation, Vered fired a shot that beat Hobart goaltender Lino Chimienti high blocker side. The marker gave the Bantams their first lead of the game as the team erased three separate one-goal deficits.
In his second collegiate start, Trinity first-year netminder Alex Morin (St. Hubert, Quebec) played well early stopping a trio of shots during a rush by Hobart two and a half minutes into the contest. Throughout the remainder of the first period, both team traded scoring chances as Morin and Chimienti each stood their ground to enter the first intermission scoreless.
After no penalties were called during the opening 20 minutes, five penalties were called in the first six minutes of the second. During that stretch, Morin received a 10-minute misconduct penalty and Hobart capitalized as Nick Bingaman knocked a rebound past Trinity junior goaltender Nathaniel Heilbron (W. Vancouver, British Columbia), who was on in relief. Trinity knotted the game at one just as one of their power plays came to an end as Vered and first-year Tyler Whitney (Wakefield, Mass.) came in on a two-on-one rush. Vered fired a shot from the left slot and Whitney buried the rebound for his team-leading seventh tally of the season.
Late in the second, Hobart regained the lead as Bobby Sokol took a shot from the right circle that beat Heilbron high glove side. Twenty-six seconds later, the Bantams answered once again as senior Liam McKillop (New York, N.Y.) found the back of the net on the short side with senior tri-captain Jackson Brewer (Weston, Mass.) and Vered registering the assists. Morin returned after the marker and made several key saves to close out the period. In total, the explosive second saw 11 penalties, 38 penalty minutes, four goals and plenty of hard hitting as the squads entered the third tied at two.
Seven minutes into the final period, Hobart took its third one-goal lead of the game as Ben Gamache scored off a feed from linemate Bo Webster. Once again, the Bantams would answer as Vered picked up his third point of the night and third goal of the year with just over 10 minutes left in regulation.
Morin made 33 saves to earn his second victory of the season between the pipes for Trinity. On the opposite end, Chimienti turned aside 25 shots in a losing effort.
The Bantams will have just under a month off for the holiday break as the team will return to action and open the 2015 calendar with a non-conference tilt at Plymouth State on Friday, Jan. 2, at 6:00 p.m.
