Box Score Waterville, Maine - The visiting Trinity College Bantams dropped
their men's lacrosse season opener, 14-4, against the New England
Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) rival Colby College
Mules this afternoon. Junior attackman Matthew Hauck
(Ridgewood, N.J.) played a part in three of Trinity's four goals
with two goals and one assist, while senior attackman Chase Growney
(Berwyn, Pa.) and sophomore attackman Michael Lofrese (Stewart
Manor, N.Y.) also tallied. First-year attacker Austin Sayre
(Summit, N.J.) enjoyed an impressive collegiate debut with six
goals and two assists, while junior attacker Derek Youngman
(Cohasset, Mass.) notched five goals and two assists. John
Grimaldi (Manchester, Mass.) added two goals and defender Peter
Willauer (Duxbury, Mass.) had the other score for the Mules.
Colby started the scoring quickly in a game with 84 total shots.
Youngman scored off a feed from Buddy Reed just 34 seconds into
play. Trinity settled down and took a 2-1 lead over the next
10 minutes. Growney tied it at 1-1 with 10:21 left in the first
quarter from Hauck. The Bantams then took their only lead of the
game when Hauck scored unassisted with 5:11 remaining.
Sayre scored three unassisted goals over the next six
minutes and the Mules led, 4-2. With the game still
tight over the next 10 minutes, Youngman scored his second goal of
the game with 3:55 left until halftime for a 5-2 lead at
the break.
Willauer made it 6-2 just 11 seconds into the second half.
First-year Austin Frank (Wellesley, Mass.) won the face-off and got
the ball to Willauer for the score. Frank was 5-for-6 in face-off
attempts and had four ground balls. Willauer's goal was the
first of five straight in the third quarter for the Mules.
Lofrese answered for Trinity with 2:34 to go in the third quarter,
but Sayre scored his fifth goal of the game with 10:33 left in the
fourth quarter to bring the margin back up to eight goals.
After a score by Hauck with 8:09 to play, Colby scored twice more
to account for a 14-4 final tally.
First-year defenseman J.R. Mastro (Bedford Hills, N.Y.) led
Trinity with four ground balls, while senior tri-captain William
Naughton (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) had three ground balls.
Willauer also had four ground balls and two caused turnovers for
Colby. Juniors Mickey Zaverucha (Duxbury, Mass.) and Riley
Cahill (South Glastonbury, Conn.) combined for 14 Bantam saves, and
Tyler Will had 12 stops for the Mules.
