Neck, N.Y.) scored five goals apiece to lead the visiting Tufts
University Jumbos to a 22-8 victory over the Trinity College
Bantams in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC)
men's lacrosse action this afternoon on Jessee/Miller
Field. Trinity drops to 2-4 overall and 1-3 in the NESCAC
with its first loss in three games, while the No. 4-ranked Jumbos
improve to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the league.
Tufts led, 4-0, early as sophomore attackman John Uppgren
(Stillwater, Minn.) fed Schoenhut on two Jumbo goals in the first
eight minutes. Junior attackman Ben Preston (Darien, Conn.)
broke the Bantam scoring drought with a goal from senior
tri-captain midfielder Terence Olsen (Avon, Conn.) at the 5:15 mark
of the first, but the Jumbos outscored Trinity, 9-0, over the rest
of the first half.
Trailing, 13-1, at the break, Trinity outscored Tufts, 6-4, in
the third quarter with senior attackman Chase Growney (Berwyn, Pa.)
picking up a goal plus three assists in the period and junior
midfielder James O'Connell (Middleton, Mass.) scoring
twice. The Jumbos opened the fourth quarter with a 5-0 run,
before Bantam junior attackman Jeff Rautiola (Acton, Mass.) closed
out the scoring with an unassisted goal with 1:20 remaining in the
game.
Junior attackman Matthew Hauck (Ridgewood, N.J.) joined Growney
and O'Connell as a multiple-point scorer for the Bantams with
one goal and one assist to go with three ground balls. Junior
goalies Mickey Zaverucha (Duxbury, Mass.) and Riley Cahill (South
Glastonbury, Conn.) had 13 and seven saves, respectively, for
Trinity. Uppgren finished with a goal and a game-high four
assists, and junior attackman Cole Bailey (Millersville, Md.) added
two goals and three assists. Tufts won, 24 of 33 face-offs,
led by junior midfielder Ryan Le (San Jose, Calif.) who won 12 of
his 13 opportunities with a game-high eight ground balls.
Tufts senior goalie Patton Watkins (Chattanooga, Tenn.) made eight
saves and caused three turnovers before yielding to sophomore Alex
Salazar (Summit, N.J.) who totaled five stops in the fourth
quarter. Tufts outshot the Bantams, 63-41, and held a
40-to-25 edge on ground balls, while the teams combined for 39
turnovers.
