Box Score Hartford, Conn. – The visiting Williams College Ephs
scored the game's final three goals to steal a 9-8 victory
from the Trinity College Bantams in New England Small College
Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's lacrosse action this
afternoon on Jessee/Miller Field. Trinity, playing its home
opener, drops to 0-2 overall and in the NESCAC, while Williams
improves to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the league.
Jack Lauroesch scored two of his five goals in a 1:49 span in
the fourth quarter, after Trinity junior attackman Matt Hauck
(Ridgewood, N.J.) had given the Bantams an 8-6 lead with his third
goal of the game from sophomore attackman Seth Bird (Concord,
Mass.) in the opening minute of the final stanza.
Lauroesch brought Williams to within a goal at 8-7 with 11:33 left
in the fourth on an unassisted tally and converted on a feed by
Michael Fahey during a man-up opportunity with 9:44 on the clock to
tie the game at 8-8. Conor Roddy netted the clincher with
8:02 left in the game, and Williams goalie Dan Whittam saved the
lone Trinity shot of the final 14:19 of the game, taken by Bird, to
preserve the win for the Ephs.
Trinity had opened the scoring on a goal by sophomore attackman
Mike Lofrese (Stewart Manor, N.Y.) with 5:48 left in the first
quarter, but Williams rattled off three in a row including two by
Lauroesch in a 2:44 span before Bantam senior tri-captain
midfielder Terence Olsen (Avon, Conn.) scored unassisted with 2:25
left on the clock to make the score, 3-2, at the end of the
first. Trinity junior attackman Jeff Rautiola (Acton, Mass.)
scored the lone goal of the second quarter on a feed by Hauck, and
the game remained tied at 3-3 for almost 13 minutes until Joe
Kinney scored for Williams 4:42 into the third frame.
Hauck caught fire for Trinity late in the third quarter, as he
assisted junior attackman Jack Castelli (Huntington, N.Y.) on a
game-tying goal with 7:12 left and scored twice to put the Bantams
ahead, 6-4, with 3:26 remaining in the third. Lauroesch and
Bantam junior attackman Ben Preston (Darien, Conn.) traded tallies
inside of the three-minute mark of the third, but Riley Hoffman
netted the final goal of the third with 2:09 on the clock to bring
Williams to within one entering the fourth.
Junior goalie Mickey Zaverucha (Duxbury, Mass.) was stellar in
the Bantam goal with 24 saves, while senior tri-captain defenseman
William Naughton (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) totaled four ground balls
and two caused turnovers, and first-year defenseman J.R. Mastro
(Bedford Hills, N.Y.) added three ground balls and three caused
turnovers. Whittam finished with six saves for the Ephs,
while David Lee was 15-for-20 on face-offs with a game-high nine
ground balls. Williams held a 54-20 shooting edge and had 33
ground balls to 21 for the Bantams.
