Box Score New London, Conn. - The Connecticut College men's lacrosse team jumped out to a 5-1 lead and recorded an 11-7 victory against the visiting Trinity College Bantams this afternoon in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's lacrosse action this afternoon. Trinity slipped to 3-6 overall and 1-5 in the NESCAC, while the Camels improved to 7-3 overall and 3-2 in the NESCAC.
Trinity junior attackman Matthew Hauck (Ridgewood, N.J.) scored his team-leading 15th and 16th goals of the season while adding four assists for the visitors. Rookie Gus Ackley (Columbus, Ohio) scored a goal and had three ground balls, while junior Jeffrey Kimm (Potomac, Md.) won eight of 15 face-offs and had three ground balls for the Bantams. Junior Mickey Zaverucha (Duxbury, Mass.) finished with 13 saves and two ground balls in the setback. Thomas Woessner (Old Lyme, Conn.) and Chad Sawyer (Northfield, Ill.) scored three goals each, while Briggs Barton (Rye, N.Y.) chipped in with two scores. Junior Derek Bertolini (Madison, Conn.) dished out five assists for the Camels, and Bobby Bleistein (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) finished with eight saves for the Camels.
First-year defenseman J.R. Mastro (Bedford Hills, N.Y.) vaulted the Bantams out to 1-0 lead when he scored just 15 seconds into regulation. The Camels responded with their first of three extra man goals when Bertolini assisted Sawyer for a goal from just outside the crease. With 1:36 left, Bertolini connected with Barton to put the Camels on top for good with a 2-1 advantage. Sawyer made it a 3-1 game when he flicked one in with two seconds left in the first quarter on a feed from Thompson. Connecticut College scored three more times in the second frame, before Hauck got one back for Trinity just before the intermission when he pounced on a ground ball in front of the cage and rifled one home.
The Camels scored the lone four goals of the third quarter to open up a seven-goal advantage. The teams exchanged goals to start the fourth quarter. After Hauck netted an unassisted marker with 8:28 remaining, Woessner answered for the Camels with a wrap-around move to round out his hat-trick. Trinity kept fighting and netted three more goals in the closing 1:18 but ran out of time
