Box Score Amherst, Mass. - Senior Devin Acton netted four goals to
help the Amherst College men's lacrosse team to an 18-8
victory over the visiting Trinity College Bantams in the New
England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's lacrosse
regular-season finale for both teams this afternoon on Gooding
Field. Trinity ends the year at 4-11 overall and 1-9 in the
NESCAC, while the No. 17-ranked Lord Jeffs close at 12-3 overall
and 7-3 in the league with their first win over the Bantams since
2011.
Trinity took a 2-0 lead just 2:37 into the contest thanks to
goals by rookie Gus Ackley (Columbus, Ohio) and junior James
O'Connell (Middleton, Mass.). Ackley needed just 13 seconds
to open up the scoring, while O'Connell doubled
the Bantam margin by converting a feed by senior
tri-captain midfielder Terence Olsen (Avon, Conn.) feed at the
12:23 mark. Acton put the Jeffs on the board with a
wrap-around goal inside of the 10-minute mark before a pair of
man-up tallies gave the Lord Jeffs their first lead of the
afternoon. Trinity sophomore attackman Seth Bird (Concord,
Mass.) quickly answered on the other end, and junior attackman Matt
Hauck (Ridgewood, N.J.) answered another Action goal withjust 47
seconds on the clock for a 4-4 tie at the first break.
Kane Haffey and Action scored a pair of Lord Jeff goals less
than four minutes apart, and Aaron Mathias scored for the fourth
time of the first half to put Amherst ahead, 7-4, with 6:19 left in
the second quarter. Haffey scored two of the three
consecutive Amherst goals after that to increase the home team's
lead to 10-4 by halftime. O'Connell broke a 20:44 Trinity
scoring drought with 10:03 left in the third quarter, but Amherst
used a 7-0 run over the next 17 minutes to put the game away.
Hauck paced Trinity with three goals and an assist, while
O'Connell had a pair of scores. Four different goalkeepers
saw time for the Bantams, with senior Derek Koelsch (Ossining,
N.Y.) taking the loss. Junior Mickey Zaverucha (Duxbury,
Mass.) recorded a team-high six saves, while classmate Riley
Cahill (South Glastonbury, Conn.) had five stops. Amherst
netminder Greg Majno finished with six saves. Mathias and
Haffey each posted five goals, while Quinn Moroney dished out five
assists.Winning 21-of-29 faceoffs, the Jeffs held a 47-27 shot
advantage and 39-30 edge in ground balls.
