Trinity Men's Ice Hockey Weekly Preview: Bowdoin & Colby

This Week: The Trinity College men's ice hockey team skated to a pair of New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) wins in front of its home crowd last weekend. The Bantams posted a 3-1 victory over Middlebury before erasing a pair of one-goal deficits late in the game en route to a 3-2 triumph against nationally ranked Williams. This weekend, the team will hit the road in league play for the first time since the opening weekend of the season.

Last Year Versus the Polar Bears: Trinity won both of the regular season meetings with Bowdoin, defeating the Polar Bears, 5-1, at home and 5-4 on the road. Bowdoin got its revenge in the NESCAC Championship Tournament Semifinals as they emilinated host the Bantams and won a 5-4 thriller.

Last Year Versus the Mules: The Bantams swept the season series with the Mules as Trinity outscored Colby, 10-5, in a pair of victories. Against Colby a year ago, forward Ryan Cole scored three goals and Michael Hawkrigg added two of his own.

Game Notes:
- Trinity is ranked No. 8 in the latest D3hockey.com poll and No. 9 in the most recent USCHO.com poll. Bowdoin is receiving votes in the D3 hockey poll and is ranked No. 15 in the USCHO poll. Trinity's lone setback this season came to No. 11 UMass Boston earlier this season at home.
- Last time out, first-year forward Tyler Whitney scored the game-winner with just 21 seconds left in the final period to lead Trinity to a thrilling 3-2 come-back victory versus No. 12 Williams. Trailing 2-1 late game, the Bantams scored twice in the final 7:10 to steal the win.
- Through 12 games, the Bantams have scored 57 goals to rank fourth in the nation in scoring offense (4.75 goals per game) after exploding for seven or more goals in five victories this winter. Trinity is fourth in the country in scoring margin at 2.67.
- Whitney has had an impressive start to his collegiate career scoring 10 goals, highlighted by a trio of two-tally games. Whitney also is tied for tops in the nation with four game-winning goals.
- Sophomore and reigning NESCAC Rookie of the Year Ryan Cole has been on fire to open the season, scoring six goals and adding 10 assists to tie senior forward Jackson Brewer for a team-high 16 points. Cole netted a hat trick and picked up an assist in the teams 7-2 victory against Amherst earlier in the season. Brewer has potted two tallies to go along with a team-high 14 helpers. He is currently tied for second in the country in assists per game
- Forwards Michael Hawkrigg and Sean Orlando have picked up where they left off last season having registered 15 points apiece. Hawkrigg has five goals and 10 assists, while Orlando has potted eight markers to go along with seven helpers.
- Between the pipes, junior Nathaniel Heilbron has played well this season, going 7-1-1 with a .926 save percentage and a 2.16 goals-against average. First-year goaltender Alex Morin has earned victories in each of his first three starts for the Bantams. In net, Morin has a 1.09 goals-against average to go with a .961 save percentage.
- Trinity's depth is shown in their third-period scoring margin. In the final 20 minutes this season, the Bantams have outscored their opponents, 21-7. Trinity has also done a good job scoring early, netting 19 goals and allowing just eight during the first period.
- The Bantams have converted 14-of-59 power-play opportunities and Trinity has killed 32-of-40 penalties this season.
