Trinity Men's Ice Hockey Weekly Preview: Conn. College & Tufts

This Week: The Trinity College men's ice hockey team skated to a pair of New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) road victories last weekend. The Bantams scored two goals in the first period en route to a 2-1 triumph versus Bowdoin and capped the week of action with a 6-3 thumping of Colby to run their winning streak to eight games. This weekend, the team will return home to square off with Connecticut College and Tufts in league play.

Earlier This Year Versus the Camels: Sophomore forward Ryan Cole scored two goals to lead the Bantams to a 7-2 victory in the season opener. Sophomore Defenseman Samuel Johnson and classmate Sean Orlando each scored a goal and registered an assist for Trinity.

Earlier this Season Against the Jumbos: In just his second collegiate contest, first-year forward Tyler Whitney potted two markers for Trinity en route to a 7-2 triumph against Tufts. Senior tri-captain Jackson Brewer scored a goal and added a pair of assists for the Bantams, while sophomore defenseman T.J. Sherman had three helpers.

Game Notes:
- Trinity jumped to No. 5 in the latest D3hockey.com poll and the Bantams are No. 5 in the most recent USCHO.com poll. Trinity's lone setback this season came to No. 10 UMass Boston earlier this season at home.
- Senior forward Liam McKillop scored with just 11 seconds left in the first period to put the visiting Trinity College Bantams ahead, 3-1, en route to a 6-3 victory over the Colby College Mules. In the contest, Cole netted two goals and added an assist for the Bantams, while junior goaltender Nathaniel Heilbron made 33 saves and recorded his first career point with an assist to earn the victory.
 - Through 14 games, the Bantams have scored 65 goals to rank fourth in the nation in scoring offense (4.64 goals per game) after exploding for seven or more goals in five victories this winter. Trinity is fourth in the country in scoring margin at 2.57.
- Whitney has had an impressive start to his collegiate career scoring 10 goals, highlighted by a trio of two-tally games. Whitney also leads the conference and is second in the nation with four game-winning goals.
- Cole has been on fire to open the season, scoring eight goals and adding 12 assists for a team-high 20 points. Cole leads the NESCAC in points per game (1.43) and points. Earlier this year, he netted a hat trick and picked up an assist in the teams 7-2 victory against Amherst.
- Brewer scored his third goal of the season last weekend in the win against Colby. The fourth-year skater leads the team in assists with 15 and is tied for second on the squad with 18 points. He currently ranks fourth in the country in assists per game at 1.07.
- Forwards Michael Hawkrigg and Sean Orlando have picked up where they left off last season having registered 18 and 16 points, respectively. Hawkrigg has six goals and 12 assists, while Orlando has potted nine markers to go along with seven helpers. Orlando leads the conference and ranks second in the country with six power-play goals.
- Between the pipes, Heilbron has played well this season, going 9-1-1 with a .929 save percentage and a 2.13 goals-against average. First-year goaltender Alex Morin has earned victories in each of his first three starts for the Bantams. In net, Morin has a 1.09 goals-against average to go with a .961 save percentage.
- Trinity's depth is shown in their third-period scoring margin. In the final 20 minutes this season, the Bantams have outscored their opponents, 23-10. Trinity has also done a good job scoring early, netting 24 goals and allowing just nine during the first period.
- The Bantams have converted 15-of-61 power-play opportunities and Trinity has killed 37-of-46 penalties this season.
