Box Score Hartford, Conn. - Junior forward Ryan Cole (Anchorage, Ak.) netted two goals to lead the top-ranked Trinity College men's hockey team to a commanding 7-1 victory over the Stonehill College Skyhawks on Saturday evening in Hartford. Trinity remains unbeaten as they start the season 3-0-0 for the second straight year while the loss drops Stonehill to 3-3-2 on the season.
Trinity didn't waste any time getting things going offensively as junior forward Ethan Holdaway (Glastonbury, Conn.) found the back of the net for the third time this season off of a rebound from a shot by junior forward Brandon Cole (Anchorage, Ak.). Both teams went on to play scoreless hockey for the majority of the period until Trinity opened up the flood gates with less than five minutes to go in the first frame. Sophomore forward Anthony Sabitsky (Sicklerville, N.J.) sent a shot towards the net that Stonehill goalie Patrick Farrington (Sandwich, Mass.) was able to turn away, but a crashing Ryan Cole (Anchorage, Ak.) was able to clean up the puck and fire it into the back of the net to put Trinity up 2-0. Less than a minute later, the Skyhawks misplayed the puck deep in their own defensive zone and Sabitsky was there to intercept it and beat Farrington one-on-one to give the Bantams a 3-0 at the end of the first period.
Trinity kept up the pressure in the second period as Ryan Cole added his second goal of the game 6:22 into the frame. Trinity's offensive onslaught continued as the Bantams found themselves on the power play with less than five minutes remaining in the period. Sophomore defenseman Griffyn Martin (Avon Old Farms, Conn.) controlled the puck at the top of the Stonehill defensive zone and sent a nifty pass towards the net that senior captain Ellie Vered (Ottowa, Ontario) re-directed past Farrington for Trinity's fifth goal of the evening.
Senior forward Michael Hawkrigg (Toronto, Ontario) scored his first goal of the season in the third period after finding open space on the near side of the ice and ripping a wrister into the back of the net off of the shoulder of Farrington. Stonehill was saved the shutout thanks to a Brendan White (North Reading, Mass.) goal on a Skyhawk powerplay with just under five minutes remaining however Trinity junior defenseman T.J. Sherman (Chesterfield, Mo.) answered right back a minute later with his first goal of the season to put Trinity up 7-1.
Trinity sophomore goalie Alex Morin (St. Hubert, Quebec) recorded 24 saves on the evening, earning his first win of the year while Farrington finished with 27 saves, despite the losing effort. Trinity outshot Stonehill 34-25 and turned all three of the teams' power plays into goals.
Trinity looks to improve to 4-0-0 tomorrow when they will play hosts to the Salve Regina Seahawks. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
