Griffin Scores Five Goals as Women's Lacrosse Blasts Bates, 15-8

Box Score

Lewiston, Maine – Junior midfielder Martha Griffin (Exeter, N.H.) recorded a season-high seven points on five goals and two assist to lead the No. 8 Trinity College women's lacrosse team to a 15-8 victory versus Bates on Saturday afternoon in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) action at Garcelon Field. With their fourth straight win, the Bantams improve to 4-1 on the year and 2-1 in league play, while the Bobcats moved to 4-3 overall and 1-2 in conference tilts.

The Bobcats, after trailing by as many as four in the first half, rallied to within two on several different occasions in the second half, but six unanswered goals by the Bantams in the final 15 minutes of play proved to be the difference. Down the stretch, Griffin scored a pair of tallies and first-year Abby McInerney (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) netted a goal and added a helper to put the game out of reach.

Trinity jumped out to the early lead on a goal by Caroline Hayes (Greenland, N.H.) less than a minute into play. The Bantams added two more tallies from junior Molly Cox (Norwell, Mass.) and Griffin, before first-year Camille Belletete (Jaffrey, N.H.) put Bates on the board with a free-position goal.

Trinity responded with three consecutive goals over the next ten minutes for a 6-1 lead with 10:58 remaining before the half. Bates swung the momentum back in their favor however, when junior goalkeeper Hannah Jeffrey (Greenwich, Conn.) stepped up for a big save and the Bobcats raced down the field for the transition goal from senior Emma Getsinger (Darien, Conn.).

Less than a minute later, Bates forced a turnover and first-year Allison Dewey (Vergennes, Vt.) won the ground ball to give the Bobcats a key possession, and Dewey followed with a goal on a feed from junior Moriah Greenstein (Glenmont, N.Y.) to cut the lead in half. After a Trinity timeout, Dewey won the ensuing draw and Greenstein rattled the shot off of the bottom of the crossbar to net the Bobcats' third goal in three minutes and bring them to within two, 6-4 heading into intermission.

The Bobcats opened the second with their momentum in tact, as Emma Getsinger won the opening draw and junior Alex Briody (North Kingstown, R.I.) followed with the quick strike on a pass from Greenstein to pull Bates within one at 6-5.

Trinity answered with two quick goals from sophomore Clare Lyne (Concord, Mass.) and another from Griffin to stretch the lead back to three, but first-year Annie Duke (Englewood, Col.) caught a transition pass at mid-field and hit first-year Teal Otley (Cumberland, Maine) on the run, who found the back of the net to again bring Bates within two, 8-6.

The teams traded goals over the next five minutes, with junior Kelan McCann (Shrewsbury, Mass.) scoring the seventh goal for Bates and bringing her team within two with 16:11 remaining in regulation. But the Bantams scored four goals in a little over two minutes, and tallied two more in the final ten minutes to put the game out of reach.

Sophomore Sydney Cowles (Wayne, Pa.) scored the eighth and final goal for Bates, and Hannah Jeffrey recorded 11 saves on the day.

Between the pipes for the Bantams, junior Emily Mooney (New York, N.Y.) got the start and made two saves to earn the victory and first-year Zoe Ferguson (Ridgewood, N.J.) closed the door and sealed the triumph by turning aside two shots in a little over 16 minutes of work.

Griffin led the offensive charge for the Bantams with seven points, while Lyne, McInerney and first-year Allie Barrett (Concord, Mass.) all registered two goals apiece. Hayes won a game-high five draw controls and caused three turnovers to go along with three groundballs.

Trinity returns to action on Tuesday, Mar. 17, with a midweek non-conference road tilt against Dickinson.
