Box Score Hartford, Conn. – Junior attackman Ryan DeSimone (St. James, N.Y.) had three goals and one assist including the game-winning tally with 49 seconds left in overtime, to lead the Trinity College Bantams to an 8-7 win over the visiting Bowdoin College Polar Bears in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's lacrosse action on a cold and snowy afternoon on Jessee/Miller Field. Trinity improves to 3-6 overall and 1-4 in the NESCAC with its first win in three games, while the Polar Bears drop to 1-7 overall and 1-4 in the league.
Bowdoin forced the extra time with three goals in the final 2:07 of regulation, as David Nemirov scored twice and Peter Reuter added the game-tying goal with 53 seconds on the clock. DeSimone got off the first shot of overtime but was denied by Bowdoin goalie Peter Mumford, and Bantam backstop Mickey Zaverucha (Duxbury, Mass.) made a crucial save against Polar Bear freshman Shawn Daly, stopping the a high shot from close with 2:32 left to return the favor. Bantam senior attacker Matt Hauck (Ridgewood, N.J.) picked up the ground ball, and DeSimone beat Mumford for the clincher and a sudden victory for the Bantams.
Daly scored from Nemirov for the only goal of the first quarter, while Bowdoin rookie Matt Crowell and Hauck exchanged second-half goals for a 2-1 Polar Bear advantage at halftime. Trailing, 3-2, Trinity rattled off four goals in a row in the third frame, beginning with an unassisted tally by senior Ben Preston (Darien, Conn.) and also including DeSimone's first two goals to give Trinity a 6-3 advantage with 1:07 left before the fourth quarter. Brandon Rothman scored a man-up goal for Bowdoin with 11 seconds left in the third, but Trinity junior middie Michael McQuiston (Greenwich, Conn.) answered with his second goal of the day early in the final frame and the Bantams' 7-4 lead held until the closing minutes of regulation.
Trinity dominated the faceoff, as freshman J.P. Masaryk (Stratford, Conn.) won 14 of 19, while senior captain Charles Finnegan (Duxbury, Mass.) had four ground balls and three caused turnovers, and classmate Dan Badolato (Boonton, N.J.) added a game-high eight caused turnovers. Reuter joined Nemirov, who also had an assisted, as a Bowdoin two-goal scorer, Samuel Hodgson added three caused turnovers. Zaverucha had 16 saves, while Mumford added 15 saves and three ground balls. Trinity outshot Bowdoin, 50-33, and finished with a 17-to-11 edge on ground balls.
