Trinity Seniors Lead the Way for Women's Hockey in 2-0 Defeat of Colby

Box Score

Hartford, Conn. – First period goals from Trinity seniors Brooke Heron (Redding, Conn) and Cheeky Herr (Princeton, NJ) proved to be the difference for the Trinity College women's hockey team in a 2-0 win over the visiting Colby College Mules in the Friday night opener of a two-game weekend series between the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) foes. Trinity improves to 8-7-1 overall and 2-6-1 in conference play, while the Mules drop to 5-10-3 overall and 3-7-1 in the NESCAC.

The Mules attacked early and often in the opening period, creating a number of chances in the Trinity zone within the first five minutes of gameplay. Trinity goalkeeper Sydney Belinskas (Port Orange, FL) came up with multiple clutch saves early on, keeping the Mules off of the scoreboard during an early power-play opportunity. Belinskas finished the game with 29 saves.

Heron broke the scoreless tie midway through the first period after receiving a feed from the defensive zone from fellow senior Shelby Labe (Pine Brook, NJ). Heron juked by a Colby defender before slotting a wrist shot past Colby keeper Angelica Crites (Middleboro, Mass.).

Heron's opening goal, her first of the season, sparked the Bantam attack that permeated the remainder of the period. Following a boarding penalty against Colby, the Bantams capitalized on a power-play opportunity as Herr collected a blocked shot in front of the Colby net and fired a shot into the top-right corner.

Herr's fifth goal of the year provided insurance for the Bantams for the remainder of the match. Despite a pair of late-game chances from Colby skaters Breanna Davis (Andover, NH) and Kat Mackey (Columbia, MD), the Mules failed to get on the scoreboard in the final minutes. Belinskas denied Mackey's point-blank shot just under the two-minute mark to secure the clean sheet and the Bantam victory.

The Bantams and the Mules face off again tomorrow at 4 p.m. at the Koeppel Center.
