Box Score Clinton, N.Y. - The Trinity College women's basketball team led for three quarters but were not able to hold on as the Hamilton College Continentals pulled away with a 72-63 win on Friday night in upstate New York. The Bantams fall below .500 for the first time this season and remain winless in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play while Hamilton improves to 8-15 and 2-7 in conference action.
Trinity shot 42.4% from the field including 5-11 from beyond the arc, but turnovers plagued the Bantams as the team committed 22 giveaways on the evening. Hamilton featured four players who finished with double-digit points, led by senior Sam Graber (Roseland, N.J.) who totaled 21 points for the Continentals. Trinity senior captain Mackenzie Griffin (Stamford, Conn.) finished with a game-high 23 points and 13 rebounds on 9-18 shooting from the field.
Neither team led by more than six points during the first three quarters. The Bantams went on a 12-5 run in the first quarter and took their largest lead of the night. Trailing 6-5, Griffin nailed a jumper and senior captain Christina Raiti (Plainview, N.Y.) added a 3-pointer for a 10-6 Trinity edge. Hamilton sophomore Lauren Getman (Manlius, N.Y.) scored in the paint and Raiti responded with another basket from beyond the arc. Hamilton's Halie Serbent (Killingworth, Conn.) answered with a 3-pointer but Griffin and junior Sheena Landy (Durham, Conn.) scored from close range, and the Bantams owned a 17-11 lead. The Continentals roared back to tie the score with six straight points but Landy beat the buzzer with a jumper and Trinity led 19-17 after one.
Hamilton still trailed 25-23 midway through the second quarter when the Continentals went on an 8-0 run. Carly Gruenberg (Warren, N.J.) scored the first four points and Graber scored the last four for a 31-25 cushion with 3:26 left before the break. Trinity ended the quarter with a 9-0 spurt and took a 34-31 edge into the locker room.
Hamilton took the lead for good with a 6-0 run to start the fourth quarter after a closely played third quarter. Hamilton outscored the Bantams 23-13 in the fourth quarter as three of Trinity's five field goals came from Griffin.
Trinity returns to action tomorrow, February 12, as they travel to Vermont to take on the Middlebury Panthers. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
