Box Score Hartford, Conn. - Senior co-captain Martha Griffin (Exeter, N.H.) led the charge with three goals and three assists as the No. 2 ranked Trinity College women's lacrosse team earned its fourth straight victory in the form of a 13-3 thumping of the No. 11 ranked Colby College Mules on Saturday morning. Trinity improves to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) while Colby falls to 1-1.
The Bantams outshot the Mules 25-13 on the day and won 12 of 15 draw controls, four of which were controlled by sophomore Kiley Coffey (West Newbury, Mass.). Trinity scored the first three goals of the game, first on a free-position shot by junior Clare Lyne (Concord, Mass.) who now has 12 goals in the Bantams first four games. Sophomore Abby McInerney (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) netted her first of two goals on the day at the 18:08 mark via an assist from Lyne before a goal from junior Nicole Stauffer (Cheshire, Conn.) put the Bantams up 3-0 before the 10 minute mark in the first half.
A yellow card called on Trinity gave the Mules a player advantage that they capitalized on when Kendall Smith (Bloomfield, N.J.) rifled a shot past Bantam goalie Zoe Ferguson (Ridgewood, N.J.) for Colby's first goal of the day. Nearly two minutes later, the Mules cut the deficit to one when Dana Swaffield (Dover, Mass.) found the back of the net for the first of two times on the day, however that was as close as Colby would get for the rest of the game. Trinity responded by scoring 10 unanswered goals, including four to end the first half. Griffin had a hand in each of the remaining four Trinity goals in the half, scoring two herself and assisting junior Karly Simpson (South Hadley, Mass.) and McInerney on others as the Bantams entered halftime with a commanding 7-2 lead.
Trinity carried its momentum into the second half and kept up the pressure as Coffey added to the lead less than five minutes into the second 30 minute frame. Griffin scored her third goal of the game just over two minutes later via an assist from Lyne as Trinity started to run away with the game. Twelve minuts of action went by without incident before the Bantams added three goals, all within a one-minute stretch. Lyne found the back of the net thanks to a slick pass from sophomore Allie Barrett (Concord, Mass.), followed by a draw control that led to Emma Malicki's (Loudonville, N.Y.) first goal of the season just 15 seconds later. Trinity's Lara Guida (Mendham, N.J.) won the ensuing draw control which gave way to a Griffin pass to Stauffer who rifled it past Colby goalie Izzy Scribano (Darien, Conn.). Sophomore Grace O'Donnell (Yarmouth, Maine) added an exclamation point to the day with her first goal of the season with 6:50 to play before Swaffield scored her second goal of the game for Colby to make the final 13-3 in favor of the hosts.
Trinity heads south to Florida for spring break where they return to action and play Salisbury on Tuesday, March 15, and Endicott on Thursday, March 17.
