Bantams Fall To No. 7-Ranked Salisbury In Florida

Clermont, Fla. - Junior Ariana Maxwell tallied five goals to lead the Salisbury University Sea Gulls to a 9-6 victory over the Trinity College Bantams in women's lacrosse action at the National Training Center this morning.  Trinity, ranked No. 3 in the nation, falls to 4-1 with its first regular-season loss in 19 games, while the No. 7-ranked Gulls improve to 6-1 with their second win in a row.

For the first six minutes of the contest, neither team was able to get on the scoreboard, but Trinity broke the trend at 23:58 when senior co-captain midfielder Martha Griffin (Exeter, N.H.) put in a free-position shot on a man-up opportunity to go up 1-0.  Just over four minutes later, Salisbury answered back when Maxwell tallied her first goal of the morning to even the score at 1-1.  Forty seconds later, the Bantams took back the lead on a goal from junior attacker Clare Lyne (Concord, Mass.), but the Sea Gulls would answer back with five-straight goals to end the first half with a 6-2 advantage.

The Sea Gulls kept their offense going early in the second half, as junior Hannah Young and freshman Gabrielle Mongno notched goals at 24:21 and 23:28, respectively, to push Salisbury's lead to 8-2.  During the next six minutes, Trinity began its comeback attempt, scoring three goals in a row from sophomores Allie Barrett (Concord, Mass.) and Kiley Coffey (West Newbury, Mass.), and Lyne to cut Salisbury's lead to 8-5 with 17:30 left in the second.

A 13-minute scoring drought ensued before Maxwell scored her fifth goal to give Salisbury a 9-5 lead.  Trinity scored once more when junior attacker Emma Malicki (Loudonville, N.Y.) found the back of the net at 1:24, but a shot by Lyne was saved by Salisbury sophomore Gianna Falcone and a second by Trinity freshman Olivia Johnson (West Granby, Conn.) sailed wide.  Falcone notched six saves and Trinity's goalie duo of sophomore Zoe Ferguson (Ridgewood, N.J.) and senior Emily Mooney (New York, N.Y.) stopped the same amount.
