Box Score Hartford, Conn. – Junior attacker Clare Lyne (Concord, Mass.) knocked the ball out of the stick of Stevens Institute of Technology sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie Schnelzer (Carmel, Ind.)and quickly shot the ball into the goal with 20 seconds left in the second three-minute overtime period to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 10-9 home-opening victory over the visiting Ducks in women's lacrosse action this evening on Sheppard Field. Trinity, ranked No. 2 in the nation, improves to 3-0 with its 21st straight home win, while Stevens falls to 2-1. Trinity hosts No. 11-ranked Colby on Saturday, March 12 at 11 a.m. and the Ducks entertain Montclair State on Wednesday, March 16.
Trailing, 9-6, with midway through the second half after a free-position goal by Duck senior Erika Wilcox (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) and Stevens playing with an extra attacker, Trinity scored the last three goals of regulation to force overtime. Rookie Olivia Johnson (West Granby, Conn.) started the comeback with a goal at the 14:42 mark, handling a pass into traffic by senior co-captain Martha Griffin (Exeter, N.H.) and making a quick fake before flipping the ball into the net. Trinity junior Karly Simpson (South Hadley, Mass.) scored with 10:23 on the clock with a hard shot from 12 yards away, and the game-tying goal was credited to Lyne after a pass by Simpson in front of the goal was redirected by Simpson's stick and made it past Schelzer. Schnelzer made a clutch save against Lyne in the closing minutes of regulation, and the Duck defense did not yield a shot in the final minute while playing a player down.
Trinity senior goalie Emily Mooney (New York, N.Y.) made a key stop early in the first overtime session against Duck junior midfielder Kathleen Kalbian (Cheshire, Conn.), while Schnelzer made a save against Bantam sophomore Kiley Coffey (West Newbury, Mass.) moments later. After Johnson controlled the opening draw of the second overtyime, Trinity maintained possession almost the entire rest of the way. Lyne hit the post with a bid from close late in the three-minute session, but Simpson tracked the ball down for the Bantams. Griffin was awarded a free position in the final minute, and Schnelzer came up with her second save on a free-position shot of the second overtime, but lost the ball to Lyne while attempting a clear.
In the first half, Griffin scored the game's first two goals and three of the first four to give the home squad a 3-1 lead after 10 minutes. Stevens outscored Trinity, 4-1, over the remaining 20 minutes of the first half, including a pair of tallies on free positions by Wilcox, to take a 5-4 lead at halftime. Wilcox scored twice more in the opening 3:46 of the second half and Stevens went ahead, 8-4, on a goal by Duck sophomore Cami Santor (Glastonbury, Conn.) with 20:38 on the clock. Lyne scored two in a row to pull Trinity to within two at 8-6 with 18:42 remaining in regulation, before Wilcox's fifth goal of the contest put Stevens back ahead by three with 16:16 left.
Lyne paced the Trinity offense with four goals, while Griffin had a hat trick, and Simpson added one goal and one assist. Sophomore goalie Zoe Ferguson (Ridgewood, N.J.) made five saves in the first half, and Mooney made a pair of stops in 35:40 of play to earn her first win of the year. Trinity senior co-captain Ashley Stewart (Dover, Mass.) was also a major factor with a game-high four draw controls, two ground balls, and a caused turnover. Santor joined Wilcox as a multiple-point scorer for the Ducks with two goals and two assists, while Kalbian scored twice, and Schnelzer finished with 11 saves.
