Trinity Men's Lacrosse Falls at Amherst

Box Score

Amherst, Mass. - Despite opening up a three-goal lead in the second quarter, the Trinity College men's lacrosse team couldn't keep up with the Purple & White as the Amherst men's lacrosse team ran away with a 22-11 victory on Wednesday evening. Trinity finishes the regular season with a 5-10 overall record and a 2-8 mark in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play. No. 8 ranked Amherst improves to 12-3 on the year.

The Purple & White were paced by Chris Albanese (Westfield, N.J.) who led all scorers with seven goals while senior captain Ryan DeSimone (St. James, N.Y.), sophomore Jack Sharrio (Marblehead, Mass.), and freshman Ben Knaus (Ross, Calif.) netted two goals each for Trinity. Bantam freshman Scott Morgan (Grand Rapids, Mich.) was one of the few bright spots for Trinity as the first-year player won 23-of-37 faceoffs and gobbled up a game-high 10 ground balls.

In a back and forth first quarter, both teams combined for eight goals as the score was knotted, 4-4, after the first 15 minutes of action. Trinity goals by junior Gus Ackley (Upper Arlington, Ohio), senior captain Seth Bird (Concord, Mass.), Knaus, and Sharrio kept the Bantams even with Amherst to start the game. The visitors tallied three straight goals to open the second quarter, highlighted by a goal from senior goalie Henry Coote (Wayne, Pa.), to take a 7-4 advantage with nine minutes to play in the half. Amherst regained momentum at the 6:22 mark thanks to the first Albanese goal of the game that sparked a 4-0 run to end the half for the Purple & White as the hosts took an 8-7 lead into the half.

Amherst scored its fifth unanswered goal just 52 seconds into the second half to extend the lead to two, however a Bantam goal from Knaus with 12:07 to play in the third quarter brought Trinity back to within one. Amherst responded to the Knuas goal with a 9-0 run to pull away from the Bantams and make it an 18-8 game. Sophomore John Caraviello (Wellesley, Mass.) scored at the 7:05 mark in the fourth, sandwiched inbetween goals from DeSimone, however the Amherst offense proved too much for Trinity as the Purple & White earned their eighth conference win of the year.
