Trinity Women's Lacrosse Races Past Springfield In NCAA Second Round

Hartford, Conn. – Senior attacker Abby McInerney (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) notched a game-high four goals and two assists to lead the Trinity College Bantams to an 16-4 victory over the visiting Springfield College Pride in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship Tournament this afternoon on Jessee/Miller Field.  Trinity, ranked No. 11 in the nation, improves to 12-6 and will face Rhodes College in the NCAA Third Round next weekend at a site to be determined.  The Pride, which downed Elms, 24-3, in yesterday's opening round at Trinity, closes the year at 15-7. 

Springfield junior Taylor Kane (Woburn, Mass.) won the opening draw and senior Kayla Schroeher (Riverhead, N.Y.) send the ball wide on the first shot of the game, but Trinity dominated from there.  The Bantams took a 2-0 lead on goals just 1:09 part by senior tri-captain midfielder Allie Barrett (Concord Mass.) and classmate Kiley Coffey (West Newbury, Mass.), and went on to outshoot the Pride, 23-7, in the first half for an 11-0 lead at the break.  McInerney scored three times, while Barrett, Coffey, and first-year attacker Sophie Berger (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) had two goals apiece, and senior attacker Grace O'Donnell (Yarmouth, Maine) scored once in the first half.  O'Donnell and McInerney also assisted on two goals in the opening 20 minutes, while senior tri-captain goalkeeper Zoe Ferguson (Ridgewood, N.J.) needed to make just three saves before intermission including an impressive stop on a shot from point-blank range by Pride junior Allie Goddard (Acton, Mass.).

Junior midfielder a Mary French (Gloucester, Mass.) and McInerney scored early goals in the second half for a 13-0 Trinity lead, before junior Amanda Nussbaum (Conway, N.H.) and senior Ann Mahoney (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) scored back-to-back to ignite a 4-1 Springfield run to make it 14-4 with 9:40 on the clock.  Pride senior attacker Shelby Corsano (Bourne, Mass.) assisted Mahoney on her goal, scored on a free-position shot, and fed Mahoney for another score during the Springfield scoring spurt.  Barrett and O'Donnell scored late goals for Trinity, while junior midfielder Emily Carothers (Kenilworth, Ill.) registered her first career assist on Barrett's tally, and Barrett fed sophomore Kristina Cartwright (Braintree, Mass.) on her first collegiate goal with time running down.

Trinity finished with a 32-to-14 shooting edge and forced 22 Pride turnovers including 22 in the opening stanza.  The Bantams also converted on five of 12 free-position shots and scored twice with a player advantage due to Springfield yellow cards.  The Pride won 13 draw controls to nine for the Bantams and Trinity won the ground-ball battle, 19-16.  McInerney's six points led all scorers, while Barrett and O'Donnell added four points, Berger finished with a hat trick, and Coffey had two goals and one assist.  Mahoney scooped a game-high six ground balls, won five draw controls, and caused two turnovers to go with her two goals, while Corsano notched five draw controls, a goal, and two assists for Springfield. 

Junior Jen Durocher (Longmeadow, Mass.) paced Trinity with four ground balls, while first-year midfielder Marcella Flibotte (Cohasset, Mass.) had three caused turnovers, while O'Donnell added three ground balls and two caused turnovers, Barrett recorded three draw controls and two caused turnovers, and McInerney won three draw controls.  In the Trinity goal, Ferguson was flawless in 35:30 with four saves and no goals allowed, while classmate Caroline Cranley (Summit, N.J.) added one stop in 24:30.  Sophomore goalie Brenna Keefe (Acton, Mass.) finished with seven saves, while rookie Abby Wylie (Ellington, Conn.) added two ground balls and two caused turnovers for the Pride.
