Box Score Medford, Mass. - The Trinity College men's lacrosse team fell to the Tufts University Jumbos, 17-8, on Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Tournament in Medford. Trinity, the No. 8-seed in the tournament, wraps up the season with an 8-7 record. The top-seeded Jumbos improve to 15-1 overall and move on to next weekend's semifinals. The Bantams reached the postseason for the first time since the spring of 2012, ending a six year drought.
Danny Murphy got Tufts on the board less than a minute into the game off a pass from sophomore Bryce Adam to take the early lead. Trinity freshman Jackson Wood (Alexandria, Va.) responded with a goal to tie the game less than a minute into the action. After a stop from the Bantam defense, senior captain John Caraviello (Wellesley, Mass.) scored the game's next goal to take a one goal advantage. Trinity juniors Ben Ferrucci (Essex, Conn.) and Andrew Collins (Brookfield, Conn.) had great chances in front of the goal, but Tufts junior goalie Mason Pollack recorded two crucial saves to keep the Jumbos within a goal.
Tufts responded with four unanswered goals over the final 9:04 of the quarter to give the hosts a 5-2 lead heading into the second quarter. Bantam sophomore Drew Kozub (Hopkinton, Mass.) ended the Jumbo run with a goal to cut the deficit 5-3. The Jumbos then responded with back-to-back scores before Wood scored with 8:48 left before the half to get the Bantams back within three goals. The Jumbos again ended a quarter on a 4-0 run to take an 11-4 lead into halftime.
Waldbaum and the Jumbo offense picked up where they left off to start the third as the sophomore scored off a pass from Adam to extend the lead to eight goals. Caraviello ended the Jumbo stretch in which they scored five unanswered goals with 8:04 remaining in the third to get Trinity back within seven. Connor McCulloch (Alexandria, Va.) then netted a man-up goal less than two minutes later to extend the Trinity scoring run before Tufts went on another run to take a 14-7 lead into the final frame.
The Jumbos scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter off the sticks of Adam and Helfrich to take a 16-7 advantage. Caraviello and Kozub again had looks on Pollack early in the fourth, but were denied by the goaltender. Wood scored a goal with 10:33 left to bring the Bantams within eight at 16-8, but it was too little, too late as Tufts held on for the victory.
Wood scored a game-high four goals for the Bantams and had six shots on net. Caraviello also rifled six shots on goal and had a pair of scores. Trinity senior Scott Morgan (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) scooped up a game-high eight ground balls while Kozub and McCulloch also scored for the Bantams. Trinity senior goalie Greg Barletta (Canton, Mass.) tallied 12 saves in net.
