Brunswick, Maine - The nation's longest overall and home-field
winning streak came to an end as the top-ranked Bowdoin College
Polar Bear field hockey team lost for the first time in nearly two
years, 2-0, to the visiting No. 12-ranked Trinity College Bantams
this afternoon. The Polar Bears see their 31-game winning
streak come to an end, as well as their 39-game home winning streak
that dated back to October of 2004.
Bowdoin drops to 11-1 overall and 6-1 in the New England Small
College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) as it falls for the first time
since losing to Messiah College in the semifinals of the 2006 NCAA
Tournament, while Trinity improves to 10-1 overall and 6-1 in the
league with its first win over the Polar Bears since 1997.
The Polar Bears controlled the pace of play in the early going,
taking the first eight shots of the game and holding an 8-0 edge at
intermission. Trinity's Gina DiNallo (West Hartford,
Conn.) made a pair of saves in the opening period to
keep the Bantams in the contest.
Trinity stormed out of the gates in the second period and scored
on their first penalty corner and shot of the contest.
Christine Mwatarura (Helensvale,
Zimbabwe) converted on an assist from Payson
Sword (Princeton, N.J.) to give the Bantams a 1-0
lead, marking the first time all season that Bowdoin had trailed in
a game.
Bowdoin responded with a flurry of chances, but DiNallo made
three more saves for Trinity and Mwatarura knocked home a loose
ball in front of the Bowdoin net with under nine minutes to go,
sealing the win for Trinity with her second goal of the game.
Emileigh Mercer and Emily Neilson split time in the cage for
Bowdoin without either collecting a save. Bowdoin held a 15-4 edge
in shots and 13-5 lead in penalty corners.
