Brunswick, Maine - The visiting Trinity College Bantam women's
soccer team scored a pair of goals with under 17 minutes to play to
take a 2-0 win at the Bowdoin College Polar Bears in New England
Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's soccer action
this afternoon. The Bantams improve to 7-4-0 overall and 3-4
in the NESCAC, while the Polar Bears dip to 5-2-3 overall and 3-2-2
in the league.
A scoreless first half saw Bowdoin hold a 5-2 edge in shots, but
neither team could convert until late in the second period. Trinity
broke into the scoring column with just 16:51 to play, as
Leigh Howard (Bethany, Conn.) rifled a low
shot from the left side that slipped inside the right post to give
the Bantams the lead. As Bowdoin pressured to get the equalizer,
Jenny Ley (Warwick, R.I.) was able to take
advantage of a counter-attack and beat her defender. Her effort
from the top of the box found the lower left corner to seal the win
for Trinity.
Emily Weedon (Wellesley, Mass.) stopped
four shots for Trinity while Kelly Thomas made three saves for the
Polar Bears. The win snaps a four-game losing streak for the
Bantams against the Polar Bears, dating back to 2004. That streak
included a 2-0 win by Bowdoin over Trinity in the NESCAC
quarterfinals a year ago.
