Hartford, Conn. - Sophomore Kristen Anderson (West
Haven, Conn.) totaled a team-high 14 kills and added 14
digs, two aces, and one block to lead the Trinity College Bantams
to a 3-1 win over the visiting Colby College Mules in New England
Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) volleyball action this
afternoon at Ray Oosting Gymnasium. Trinity, which lost its first
match today in a six-team, two-day NESCAC volleyball event in
Hartford, 3-0, against Bowdoin is now 11-10 overall and 2-6 in the
NESCAC. The Bantams also lost to NESCAC rival Bates, 3-0, to
open the weekend
In today's other NESCAC action at Trinity, Wesleyan downed both
Bates and Colby by 3-1 scores to improve to 18-5 overall and 7-1 in
the conference, while Connecticut College blanked Bates, 3-0, and
edged Bowdoin, 3-2, in a seesaw battle and the only five-game match
of the afternoon, to up their record to 15-9 overall and 6-2 in the
league. Bowdoin moves to 14-12 overall and 3-4 in the NESCAC,
while Colby drops to 9-12 overall and 0-6 in the league, and Bates
falls to 12-14 overall and 1-5 in the league.
Trailing, 6-5, in the first game against Colby, the Bantams
outscored the Mules, 20-8 the rest of the way to take a 1-0 lead,
but Colby scored four of the last five points of the second game to
even the match at 1-1. Trinity used a 12-4 run to turn a 3-3
game tie into a 15-7 Bantam lead en route to a 25-18 triumph in the
third game, and rattled off 18 of the fourth game's first 22 points
before finishing with a 25-14 win on a Colby service error.
Junior OH Molly Ullman (Studio City, Calif.) had
11 kills, five aces, and 12 digs, while senior Emily
Borsting (Portland, Oregon) added 13 kills, 10 digs, three
aces, and a block. Senior S Jenny Lawrence
(Lafayette, Calif.) contributed 28 assists, three aces,
and 17 digs for the Mules.
Bowdoin junior Jenna Diggs (LaJolla, Calif.)
powered the Polar Bears against the Bantams in Trinity's early
match, totaling 25 assists and 21 digs. Anderson had 12 kills
and seven digs, and freshman Jen Low (San Francisco,
Calif.) notched 36 assists and eight digs for Trinity.
For the nine volleyball matches on the Trinity campus last night
and today, Trinity "pinked out" Ray Oosting Gymnasium and collected
donations for the Side Out Foundation, which boosts breast cancer
awareness. Well over $3,000 dollars were raised for the
charity.
