Hartford, Conn. - Sophomore Tamara Brown (Annandale,
Va.) scored two goals to lead the Tufts University Jumbos
to a 2-1 overtime win over the Trinity College Bantams in field
hockey this afternoon on Robin L. Sheppard Field. Trinity,
ranked No. 2 in the New England West Region and No. 9 in the
nation, falls to 11-2 overall and 6-2 in the NESCAC) while Tufts,
ranked No. 1 in the New England East Region and No. 5 in the
nation, remains perfect at 12-0 overall and 8-0 in the
NESCAC.
The defensive effort on both squads resulted in a scoreless first
half, which stayed that way, until Brown netted her first goal of
the afternoon early in the second half to put the Jumbos up
1-0. Despite breakaway opportunities, Trinity was unable to
answer until the very last moment, when senior Karli Del
Rossi (Mantua, N.J.) scored her team-high 13th goal of the
season with no time on the clock to tie the game in regulation.
On the play, Trinity was awarded a penalty corner with no time
remaining, giving the Bantams a final shot at tying the game.
After Tufts freshman goalkeeper Marianna Zak (Concord,
Mass.) blocked Del Rossi's first shot, Del Rossi picked up
the rebound and penetrated the Tufts goal to send the
match to overtime.
In the overtime period, Trinity was on the offensive attack with
the exception of two Tufts breakaways, on the last of which,
Amanda Roberts (Wenham, Mass.) connected with
Brown for the second time in the game to give the Jumbos the
win. Brown had a clear shot and beat first-year goalkeeper
Gina Dinallo (West Hartford, Conn.), who had made
big saves all day for the Bantams. The loss was Trinity's
first in their last five games, and the Tufts win gives them an
18-game regular season winning streak, dating back to last
season. Goalkeepers on both sides made a collection of
highlight saves, with Dinallo finishing with ten stops on the
afternoon, and Zak finishing with six.
