Hartford, Conn. - Thirty-two seconds into the second overtime,
junior Molly Malloy (Stamford, Conn.) scored the
game-winning goal for the Amherst College Lord Jeffs, which upset
the Trinity College Bantams 1-0 in an epic battle tonight on Robin
L. Sheppard Field. The loss is significant for both teams,
which were fighting for home field advantage in the opening round
match of the NESCAC Championship Tournament. Trinity, No. 5
in the conference (6-3, NESCAC) will square off in a re-match with
Amherst, No. 4 in the league (6-3, NESCAC), on Sunday.
Neither offense was able to penetrate the strong defensive lines
tonight, until sophomore Carly Leahy (Weston,
Mass.) assisted Malloy's game-winning goal. Trinity
was in control for the majority of the match, outshooting the Lord
Jeffs 17-8, but could not capitalize, as Amherst freshman
goalkeeper Emily Vitale (Cheshire, Conn.) denied
every Bantam attempt, finishing with eight saves for the
shutout.
Trinity freshman goalkeeper Gina Dinallo (West Hartford,
Conn.) made four saves, blanking the Amherst offense for
105 minutes, until Malloy put an end to the stalemate.
The Bantams will travel to Amherst on Sunday, Nov. 2 for a 1 p.m.
showdown with the Lord Jeffs in the opening round of the NESCAC
Championship Tournament.
