Williamstown, Mass. - Junior forward Sarah Walmsley (Pelham
Manor, N.Y.) scored the go-ahead goal in the 71st minute with a
header from sophomore back Annie Neil (Longmeadow, Mass.) to lead
the Williams College Ephs to a 4-2 win over the visiting Trinity
College Bantams in New England Small College Athletic Conference
(NESCAC) women's soccer action this afternoon. Trinity drops
to 4-3 overall and 0-3 in the NESCAC with its third straight
defeat, while the Ephs, ranked No. 1 in New England and in the
nation, improves to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the league.
Niel laced a curving ball to the far right post, where Walmsley
rushed in to head the ball into the net to give Williams the lead
for good. Trinity had stunned the Ephs with an early goal, as
freshman forward Jenny Ley (Warwick, R.I) scored into an empty net
6:50 into the game. Williams goalkeeper Lauren Sinnenberg
(Westfield, N.Y.) came out of goal in a foot race with Ley to
retrieve the ball. Sinnenberg got there first, but the ball
deflected off her hands and Ley collected for the score. Eph
senior Gabrielle Woodson (Plano, Texas) scored on a rebound to knot
the score at 1-1 in the 21st minute and the Ephs reclaimed the lead
just seven minutes later. Williams sophomore forward Annelise
Snyder (Ashby, Mass.) laced an arched shot that curved just above
the fingertips of leaping Trinity sophomore goalie Emily Weedon
(Wellesley, Mass.) and landed into the upper left corner.
Early in the second half, Ley crossed the ball to fellow Bantam
rookie forward Leigh Howard (Bethany, Conn.), who was charging hard
from midfield, and Howard hit a hard ball on the ground to the far
right post to tie the game, 2-2, 12:53 into the second
stanza. Trinity's two goals were the most relinquished by a
Williams team in a regular season game since October 11, 2006 and
the total matched the sum Williams had allowed in its first five
games. Sophomore Sara Wild (Portland, Oregon) added an
insurance tally at 81:05 for the Ephs and Julia Schreiber
(Cockeysville, Md.) recorded both of Willams' saves in the second
half in the home goal . Weedon notched eight saves in the
Bantam net.
