Hartford, Conn. - Junior goaltender Krystyn Elek
(Summerville, S.C.) made 27 saves to lead the visiting
Amherst College Lord Jeffs to a 3-1 win over the Trinity College
Bantams in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC)
women's ice hockey action this afternoon at Williams Rink.
Trinity, ranked No. 10 in the nation, falls to 2-2 overall
and in the NESCAC with the loss in its home opener. Amherst,
ranked No. 4 nationally, improves to 4-0 overall and in the league
with the sweep of this weekend's home-and-home series and extends
its unbeaten streak against Trinity to eight games.
Amherst struck early in the first period, when sophomore
Courtney Hanlon (Fullerton, Calif.) stole the puck
at the blue line during a Trinity power play and drew a tripping
penalty to bring the Lord Jeffs to even strength. A second
Bantam tripping penalty eight seconds later gave Amherst the
advantage and junior forward Molly Malloy (Stamford,
Conn.) stuffed in a rebound 6:25 into the stanza to give
the visitors the lead. Trinity junior forward
Michelle Chee (San Francisco, Calif.) narrowly
missed a chance to tie, when she stole a pass that Elek made while
she was out of the crease and shot just to the left of the empty
net. Amherst scored again when Trinity junior goalie
Isabel Iwachiw (New York, N.Y.) made a nice save
on a shot by Lord Jeff sophomore forward C.C. Wyshnytzky
(Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) only to see the puck knocked in on
a rebound by Amherst junior forward Kate Dennett (Highlands
Ranch, Colo.).
The Lord Jeffs extended their lead in the second period to 3-0,
as Iwachiw saved a hard shot and appeared to cover the puck, but
Amherst freshman forward Emily Vitale (Cheshire,
Conn.) saw it sitting alone behind Iwachiw and poked it
into the net. Trinity sophomore forward Kim Weiss
(Potomac, Md.) put the Bantams on the board, streaking in
from the left wing to flip a rebound into the upper right of the
net after Elek had saved a shot by Bantam sophomore forward
Alexa Guglielmi (Rocky Hill, Conn.) at the 8:13
mark of the second frame. Trinity outshot Amherst, 13-8, in
the third period but Elek saved each one to preserve the
victory. Iwachiw finished with 36 stops in the Bantam goal.
