Middletown, Conn. - The visiting Trinity College Bantams
remained undefeated when senior Christine Mwatarura started and
finished a goal-scoring situation for the Bantams just 1:29 into
overtime in a 1-0 win over the Wesleyan University Cardinals in New
England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) field hockey
action this afternoon. Trinity, ranked No. 18 in the nation,
improves to 7-0 overall and 3-0 in the NESCAC with its first road
game at Wesleyan in six tries, while the Cardinals fall to 1-5
overall and -4 in the league.
Wesleyan attempted to move the ball up its defensive right side
but Mwatarura stole the ball from Wesleyan freshman Ali Singer and
sent the ball forward to teammate junior Carrie Wolcott.
Wolcott moved in deeper on the left offensive side and sent a
centering pass back to Mwatarura who fired a shot from the middle
of the circle high into the back of the Wesleyan goal to end the
game.
Trinity had kept play mostly in Wesleyan's end the first
half, outshooting the Cardinals, 6-0, and holding a 9-0 edge in
penalty corners. Wesleyan held a 4-2 edge in shots and 3-2
margin in corners during the second half. Sophomore Payden
Sra finished with three saves in the Trinity goal while junior
Breen McDonald had two stops for Wesleyan.
