Hartford, Conn. - Sophomore guard Ian Fels (Miami,
Fla.) scored 13 of his team-high 17 points in the second
half to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 64-57 win over the
visiting Connecticut College Camels in New England Small College
Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's basketball action this evening
at Oosting Gymnasium. The Bantams improve to 4-8 overall and
1-0 in the NESCAC with their first win in three games, while the
Camels fall to 9-5 overall and 0-1 in the league with their first
loss in four games.
Trailing, 14-9, after eight minutes of play, Trinity outscored
the Camels, 20-0 over the next 11 minutes for a 29-14 lead, and
led, 31-16, at the break. Trinity, which held Connecticut
College to six field goals in 18 attempts in the first half, scored
the first two buckets of the second stanza on a jumper by Fels and
drive by senior co-captain forward Aaron Westbrooks
(Dublin, Ireland) to take its biggest lead of the game at,
35-16, and held a double-digit lead for the vast majority of the
next 15 minutes. The Camels cut the lead to 52-43 with four
minutes left to play on a layup by junior guard Shavar
Bernier (Dover, N.H.), and pulled within four at 56-52
with just under two minutes on the clock after along trey by
Bernier and a drive by freshman guard Eddie McGuiness
(Pearl River, N.Y.). The Bantam defense stopped the
Camels on three straight possessions down the stretch and four
different players combined on 8-for-8 shooting from the foul line
to preserve the Trinity triumph.
Trinity sophomore forward Luke MacDougall
(Baldwinsville, N.Y.) joined Fels in double figures in
scoring with 14 points and added a team-high six rebounds, while
classmate Salah Abdo (Chelsea, Mass.) added 10
points, four assists, and three steals. Freshmen forward
Demetrius Porter (Virginia Beach, Va.) paced the
Camels with 17 points, and six boards, while Bernier totaled 16
points, six rebounds, and three steals.
