Hartford, Conn. - Senior co-captain forward Stan Grayson
(Brooklyn, N.Y.) totaled a career-high 25 points, sinking
12 out of 17 shots from the field, 10 rebounds, four assists, and
three steals to lead the visiting Wesleyan University Cardinals to
a 68-52 win over the Trinity College Bantams in New England Small
College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's basketball action this
afternoon at Oosting Gymnasium. The Bantams fall to 4-9
overall and 1-1 in the NESCAC, while the Cardinals improve to 5-9
overall and 1-1 in the league with their first win in four games
and their first win over Trinity in the last six meetings between
the teams.
Trinity led, 32-31, at the half on a three-pointer in the final
minute by sophomore guard Ian Fels (Miami, Fla.),
but Wesleyan scored seven quick points to open the second half,
including four by Grayson, to ignite a 28-8 run over the first 12
minutes after the break. A three-pointer by Cardinal freshman
Jason Mendell (Bedford, N.Y.), who scored all 12
of his points in the second stanza, gave Wesleyan its largest lead
of the game at 59-40 with eight minutes on the clock, and Trinity
could get no closer than 15 points behind the rest of the
way.
The Bantams had led in the first half, 22-12, after a pair of
free throws by senior co-captain Paul Rowe (Brooklyn,
N.Y.) with just under nine minutes on the clock, but
Wesleyan fought back and took a 31-26 lead at the 2:07 mark before
a traditional three-point play by Bantam senior co-captain forward
Aaron Westbrooks (Dublin, Ireland) and Fels' late
three gave Trinity the lead at halftime.
Trinity shot 22.6 percent from the field in the second half
(7-for-31) and 32.2 percent for the game (19-for-59), while
Wesleyan outboarded the Bantams, 40-26. Rowe paced the
Bantams with 12 points, making all eight of his tries from the foul
line, and added a pair of blocked shots, while sophomore forward
Tim Dunn (Holyoke, Mass.) totaled all of his 10
points and team-high six boards in the first half. Wesleyan
sophomore forward David Maltz (Rosemont, Pa.)
finished with 12 points and seven rebounds, while classmate
Michael Battle (Arlington, Va.) added 10 points
off the bench, and junior guard Steve Tolbert (Chatsworth,
Calif.) distributed seven assists.
