Baskauskas Nets 1,000 Points In His Lord Jeff Career

Hartford, Conn. - Junior forward Steven Wheeler (Bloomington, Minn.) scored a game-high 19 points, making three out of five shots from three-point range, and added five rebounds to lead the visiting Amherst College Lord Jeffs to a 65-48 win over the Trinity College Bantams in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's basketball action this afternoon at Oosting Gymnasium.  The Bantams fall to 5-10 overall and 1-2 in the NESCAC, while the Lord Jeffs, ranked No. 9 in the nation, improve to 14-2 overall and 3-0 in the league. 

Trinity held a 25-20 lead with just under three minutes left before the break on a three-point shot by senior co-captain forward Aaron Westbrooks (Dublin, Ireland), but Wheeler answered with his first trey of the game and Lord Jeff sophomore guard Conor Meehan (Meriden, Conn.) drove the length of the floor for a layup as time expired to tie the score 25-25.  With the game tied at 33-33 early in the second half, Amherst used a 16-2 run to take a 49-35 lead at the 8:20 mark.  The Bantams pulled to within single digits at 51-42 on back-to-back baskets by sophomore guard Salah Abdo (Chelsea, Mass.) with just under six minutes left to play, but Amherst scored the next six points to put the game out of reach. 

Trinity shot just 24.6 percent from the field and lost the battle on the boards, 47-32, but stayed in the game by forcing 20 Amherst turnovers.  Senior co-captain Paul Rowe (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored a team-high 14 points, while sophomore forward Luke MacDougall (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.  Amherst senior co-captain forward Brian Baskauskas (Palo Alto, Calif.) added 13 points and a team-high nine boards, and an early three-pointer made him the 23rd player in Lord Jeff history to score 1,000 points in his career.  Meehan notched 16 points and six rebounds for Amherst.
