Somerville, Mass. - The visiting Trinity College Bantams earned
a 1-1 tie in double overtime against the Tufts University Jumbos in
New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's
soccer action this afternoon at Kraft Field.
The Bantams broke through first, scoring on their first shot of
the game in the 53rd minute. Sophomore Leigh Howard
(Bethany, Conn.) played the ball through the Jumbos' back
line, finding classmate Jenny Ley (Warwick,
R.I.) streaking to the net. Ley slid the ball low and put
it past Tufts keeper Kate Minnehan's (Hopkinton,
N.H.) left side for her fifth goal of the season.
Senior Whitney Hardy (Truckee, Calif.) scored the
equalizing goal, but Tufts was unable to capitalize on several
chances throughout the overtime period. Hardy peppered nine
shots at the Trinity goal and finally connected in the 63rd minute.
Classmate Cara Cadigan (Nahant, MA) played her at
the corner of the box, and Hardy curled the ball on goal, finding
the far post to even the score at 1-1. Tufts continued to
pressure the strong Trinity backline, but could not capitalize on a
flurry of opportunities late in the game and in the overtime
period. Senior Ali Maxwell (Exeter, N.H.) had two
shots saved five minutes from the end of extra time, and senior
Fanna Gamal (Albany, Calif.) sent a shot wide
after having another one blocked.
Minnehan stopped two shots for Tufts, which is now
6-4-1 overall and 4-2-1 in the NESCAC. Junior backstop
Emily Weedon (Wellesley, Mass.) made 11 saves in a
strong effort for the Bantams, who now post a 4-3-3 overall record
and a 2-3-2 mark in the NESCAC.
