Mansfield, Conn. - Freshman Daniela Marchitto (Orange,
Conn.) scored the game's only goal with 18 minutes left to
cap a strong second half by the Eastern Connecticut State
University Warrior women's soccer team in a 1-0 victory over the
visiting Trinity College Bantams this afternoon at the
Mansfield Outdoor Complex. Trinity falls to 4-4-3 and the
Warriors improve to 8-4-3 with their first win over the
Bantams in four seasons.
Marchitto scored her fifth goal of the season on her only shot
of the match. Eastern Connecticut senior Sarah Swann
(Oxford, Conn.) won a ball near midfield and sent it ahead
to senior Taylor MacDonald (Oak Bluffs, Mass.).
MacDonald slotted a perfect pass to the foot of Marchitto, who
carried alone into the box before slipping a shot in close under
Trinity junior keeper Emily Weedon (Wellesley,
Mass.). MacDonald set up Marchitto with the only
goal just two minutes after she was unable to capitalize on a
golden opportunity which was set up on a pass by Marchitto.
MacDonald crossed over to her left after taking the pass on the
right wing but fired an eight-yarder right at Weedon.
Trinity had the better of play in the first half, but the
Warriors took control in the second half. Eastern's defense allowed
only two shots in the second half, with senior keeper Kim
Church (Farmington, Conn.) making numerous saves to
preserve the scoreless game. The Warriors had six shots and had a
6-1 advantage in corner kicks in the second half. Trinity's
best chance of the second half came four minutes after the break,
when sophomore Jenny Ley (Warwick, R.I.) stripped
an Eastern player of the ball and unloaded an 18-yard shot which
Church hauled in. Ley had nearly given Trinity a 1-0 lead with
three minutes left in the first half when she left-footed an open
shot from 12 yards over the crossbar. Weedon finished
with four saves for the Bantams.
