Hartford, Conn. - Sophomore Gina Dinallo (West Hartford,
Conn.) made 13 saves in goal to lead the Trinity College
Bantams to a 2-1 victory over the Bowdoin College Polar Bears in
New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) field hockey
action this afternoon on Robin Sheppard Field. Trinity,
ranked No. 4 in the nation, improves to 13-0 overall and 8-0 in the
NESCAC, while the Polar Bears fall to 9-4 overall and 4-4 in the
league.
The Bantams jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal from sophomore
Payson Sword (Princeton, N.J.) midway through the
first half. Trinity added a second goal, compliments of
senior Carrie Wolcott (Hamilton, Mass.), to take a
2-0 lead toward the end of the half. Junior Robyn
Williams (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe) collected assists on both
goals.
Bowdoin made things interesting in the second half, applying
constant offensive pressure and outshooting Trinity, 13-0, in the
half. The Polar Bears outshot the Bantams, 21-3, in the
game. Senior Kara Kelley (Dedham, Mass.)
beat Dinallo for the lone Bowdoin score in the second half, giving
the Polar Bears a little more than seven minutes to try tie the
game but the Bantam defense held on.
With the victory, Trinity clinches the top spot in the NESCAC
Championship Tournament, scheduled to begin on Nov. 1.
Trinity plays NESCAC rival Amherst College on Fri., Oct. 30, at 4
p.m. in the regular season finale. A win would give the
Bantams a perfect 14-0 record, which would be their best regular
season finish since going 14-0 in 1997, when the team made the NCAA
Final Four.
