Amherst, Mass. - Junior Wesley Vesprini (Lexington,
Mass.) made 34 saves to earn a shutout in goal,
leading the visiting Trinity College Bantams to a 2-0 win over
the Amherst College Lord Jeffs in New England Small
College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's ice hockey action this
afternoon at Orr Rink. Trinity improves to 2-0 overall and in
the NESCAC, while the Lord Jeffs, ranked No. 10 in the nation,
fall to 1-1 overall and in the league. Trinity wins its first
game against the Lord Jeffs in the last three meetings
including a 3-0 defeat to close the 2008-09 campaign in the NESCAC
Championship Semifinals.
The first two periods featured exciting play in net by both
goaltenders, as Vesprini made 15 saves in the first period
including many acrobatic stops late in the period, and Amherst
junior Cole Anderson (Eckville, Alberta)
stopped 12 shots in the second stanza including back-to-back
glove saves on hard shots from close to preserve the scoreless
tie. Amherst nearly scored twice in the first two periods, as
one shot in each stanze hit iron but bounced away. Trinity
freshman forward Steve Rogers (Watertown, Mass.)
broke the stalemate at 10:40 in the third, stealing the puck
from an Amherst defenseman in the Lord Jeff end and beating
Anderson from rigth to left with a nice individual move.
Vesprini and the Trinity defense held Amherst the rest of the way,
before junior forward Ben Shellington (Hanover,
Mass.) put the game away with an empty netter in the final
minute. Anderson totaled 24 assists for Amherst.
Vesprini and junior defenseman Regnars Alksnis (Talsi,
Latvia) recorded assists for the Bantams.
