Hartford, Conn. - Sophomore forward Jon Pike (Exeter,
N.H.) scored 29 points in his first career start to lead
the Trinity College Bantams to an 85-59 win over the Babson College
Beavers in the home opening match on Stan Ogrodnik Court at Ray
Oosting Gymnasium this afternoon in men's basketball action.
Trinity improves to 2-2 while Babson falls to 3-2 on the season.
With the score tied at 6-6, Trinity spun a 15-0 run, grabbing a
21-6 lead just 6:30 into the game. The Bantams never looked
back as Pike would score 18 of his 29 points in the first half,
propelling Trinity to a 48-25 lead at the midpoint. Pike, who
had just 22 points in his career before today, also collected three
blocks, three assists, two rebounds and a steal in the game, as
Trinity maintained control throughout the contest.
Babson junior guard Matt Zoia (Nashua, N.H.),
the younger brother of Trinity assistant coach Zach Zoia, scored
nine points, collected four rebounds and made four steals to
highlight the Babson roster, and freshmen Marcus McDermott
(Milton, Mass.) and Russell Brathwaite (Brooklyn,
N.Y.) combined for 20 points to lead the Beavers in
scoring.
Trinity sophomore guard Salah Abdo (Chelsea,
Mass.) filled out the stat sheet, collecting seven points,
five rebounds, five assists, five steals and three blocks,
sophomore forward Chris Applegate (High Point,
N.C.) collected 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds, and
junior guard Ian Fels (Miami, Fla.) added five
steals in the game. Junior forward Timothy Dunn
(Holyoke, Mass.) and first-year Mick Distacio
(Yarmouth, Maine) combined for 21 points and eight
rebounds off the bench for the Bantams.
Trinity will host Western Connecticut on Wed., Dec. 2 at 7:30
p.m. and New York City Tech on Sat., Dec. 8 at 3 p.m.
