Medford, Mass. - The Trinity College Bantams lost to the
Connecticut College Camels, 3-0, in the quarterfinal round of the
New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Volleyball
Championship Tournament this evening at Tufts University.
Game scores were 25-19, 25-20, 25-18. The Camels (22-5) will
meet Williams College in the second semifinal on Saturday afternoon
at Cousens Gymansium. Trinity finishes its year at 13-10.
Connecticut College opened their first set on a 6-0 run, led by
early kills by sophomore Amy Newman (Los Angeles, CA). Newman, who
led all scorers with 16 kills, also pitched in four service aces
and assisted on three blocks during the match. Junior Chelsea
Manning (Cockeysville, MD) added three kills in the first set, and
Marissa DeMais (Hillsdale, NJ) began her fine night setting up
points. The junior would tally 34 assists before the night was
through. A major story of the match would be the net presence of
the higher seed. In the first set, Manning, DeMais and senior Meg
Christman (Wilmington, DE) would combine for big blocks en route to
a 25-19 Camel victory.
Set two was the closest between the teams, as Trinity got
multiple kills from Kelly O'Brien (Pelham, NY) and Danielle Isaman
(West Hartford, CT). Isaman led the Bantams with 10 kills on
the evening, while contributing six digs. Connecticut College had
built up a durable lead, however, thanks to a five-point run,
served by Rachel Schroff (Palos Verdes, CA) and highlighted by two
serving aces for the freshman. Schroff would have three aces in the
game and four throughout the course of the match. The block party
continued for Connecticut College, as Christman combined with
Schroff and Lauren Wise (Oakton, VA) to snuff several more Trinity
attempts.
Isaman pitched in three more kills for Trinity in the third set,
and was helped by a service ace from sophomore setter Jennifer Low
(San Francisco, CA). After tying the game at nine, however, the
Bantams could not break through any further. A flurry of kills from
Newman, Schroff, and two blocks from Manning put the game beyond
doubt, allowing the Camels of Connecticut College to advance with a
three-set win. Trinity sophomore Sarah Blagden (Charleston,
SC) dug out 14 balls to lead all players, while DeMais and Ally
Terlizzi (Mount Kisco, NY) each dug out nine for Connecticut
College.
