Bantams Draw Amherst in NESCAC
Tourney Opener Next Weekend
Hartford, Conn. - Senior co-captain
forward Aaron Westbrooks (Dublin, Ireland) totaled
a game-high 21 points, six rebounds, and four steals to lead the
Trinity College Bantams to an 83-73 win over the visiting Williams
College Ephs in New England Small College Athletic Conference
(NESCAC) men's basketball regular season finale for both teams this
afternoon at Oosting Gymnasium.
Trinity closes the regular campaign at
9-14 overall and 4-5 in the NESCAC, while the Ephs finish at 16-8
overall and 6-3 in the league. The Bantams have qualified for
the NESCAC Championship Tournament for the ninth consecutive season
as the No. 7 seed and will play a quarterfinal game at No. 2-seeded
Amherst on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 2 p.m. No. 3-seeded Williams
will host No. 6-seeded Bates in the quarterfinals on Feb. 21 at 3
p.m.
Williams took a 27-16 lead after an
8-0 spurt capped off by a three-pointer by junior Blake
Schultz (Atherton, Calif.) with nine minutes left in the
first half. The Bantams rallied to score 20 of the game's
next 24 points for a 36-31 lead the break. Westbrooks scored
eight points during the run. Williams again jumped ahead
after intermission and held a 48-43 lead with just over 12 minutes
on the clock, but Trinity responded similarly to the first half and
went ahead by double digits at 76-66 on a pair of free throws by
sophomore guard Brian Ford (Bronx, N.Y.) with a
minute remaining. Trinity won the game at the charity stripe,
hitting 29 out off 33 attempts in the second half and 35 out of 40
for the game.
Five Bantams finished in double figures in scoring, as sophomore
forward Luke MacDougall (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) had
15 points and a team-high nine rebounds, classmate Ian Fels
(Miami, Fla.) made 11 out of 12 shots from the foul line
to account for almost all of his 13 points, Ford added 12 points
off the bench, and senior co-captain guard Paul Rowe
(Brooklyn, N.Y.) notched 10 points and seven rebounds.
Schultz paced Williams with 18 points, while sophomore
forward Harlan Dodson (Nashville, Tenn.) scored 14
points with four rebounds, and senior co-captain guard
Kevin Snyder (Littleton, Colo.) added 13 points
and five boards. The three combined to make 11 three-pointers
in 22 attempts for the Ephs.
