Waterville, Maine - Becky Julian (South Windsor,
Conn.) scored the game-winning goal 2:03 into overtime to
lead the Colby College Mules to a 3-2 overtime victory over the
visiting Trinity College Bantams in the New England Small College
Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's ice hockey regular season
finale for both squads this afternoon at Alfond Rink.
Colby finishes at 11-10-3 and clinches a home game for the
NESCAC Quarterfinals next weekend. Trinity closes the regular
campaign at 13-9-2 overall and 8-7-1 in the league. Trinity
clinched the No. 3 seed in the NESCAC Tourney and
also will host a quarterfinal game next weekend.
Colby scored two goals in the final 4:53 of regulation and then
got the big goal from Julian in overtime. After a scoreless
first period, Trinity scored 3:30 into the second period when
Sarah Kohn (Winchester, Mass.) tallied off assists
from Domi Di Dia (Studio City, Calif.) and
Hadley Gleason (Boston, Mass.). The Mules
tied the game at 1-1 when Marissa Simmons (Chestnut Hill,
Mass.) scored on a power play off passes from
Andrea Fuwa (Wilmette, Ill.) and senior
Amanda Comeau (Southbury, Conn.) with just 4:53
left in regulation.
Colby took its first lead of the game when senior
Colette Finley (St. Paul, Minn.) found the back of
the net at 17:12 of the period. Heather Nickerson
(Falmouth, Mass.), another senior, and Simmons had
assists. Trinity would not give up and sent the game into
overtime after pulling the goalie. The move paid off as Kohn scored
with 1:35 to play from Britney McKenna (Rye,
N.Y.). Julian scored the clincher from the left side
on a blast from between the blue line and the top of the
circle. Brown finished with 31 saves and Bantam sophomore
Hilary Novik (Lakeville, Conn.) had a shutout for
more than 55 minutes and stopped 28 shots.
