Hartford, Conn. - Senior co-captain midfielder Kate
Sheridan (Hingham, Mass.) totaled five assists and
sophomore Sarah Warnke (Lakeville, Conn.) made 14
saves in goal to lead the visiting Colby College Mules to a 10-7
win over the Trinity College Bantams in New England Small College
Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's lacrosse action this afternoon
on Sheppard Field. Trinity, ranked No. 12 in the nation,
falls to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the NESCAC, while the No. 11-ranked
Mules improve to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the league. The game
was a rematch of the 2008 NESCAC Championship Finals, which Colby
won by a score of 14-12 last May.
The teams played to a 4-4 tie over the first 22 minutes of the
opening half, as Trinity sophomore attacker Caitlin Irvine
(Westwood, Mass.) scored twice in the first four
minutes. Junior attacker Jenn Calver (Barnard,
Vt.) gave Trinity a 4-3 lead at the 18:12 mark on a
blistering shot from the circle on a free position, but Colby
answered three minutes later when Sheridan fed senior attacker
Becky Julian (South Windsor, Conn.) on the first
of three consecutive Mule goals that came as a result of her
assists with 8:21 left in the stanza. Colby added a fourth
unanswered goals by senior attacker Claire Donegan (Great
Falls, Va.) with 33 seconds before the break to give the
Mules a 7-4 lead.
Colby came out shooting in the second half, and Trinity freshman
goalie Gina Dinallo (West Hartford, Conn.) made
three stops in the first two minutes before Mule junior attacker
Amy Campbell (North Andover, Mass.) finally
bounced one past with 28:09 on the clock. The Mules increased
their advantage to 10-4, but Trinity rallied late beginning with
the third goal of the game for Irvine at the seven-minute
mark. Calver rocketed in another goal 1:15 later and
sophomore midfielder Alisen Urquhart (Redding,
Conn.) streaked down the middle of the field untouched for
a third score to pull Trinity within three with 2:07 left to
play. The Bantams gained possession again, but failed to get
off a shot when sophomore midfielder Rachel Romanowsky
(Hampstead, N.H.) was called for a charge while making a
move around the back of the Colby goal. The Mules held the
ball for the remainder of the contest until the closing seconds.
Colby, which held the Trinity defense to six goals less than its
previous season-low, controlled 12 draw controls to against six for
the Bantams. Mule sophomore midfielder Casey Thomas
(Needham, Mass.) and Bantam freshman midfielder
Liz Bruno (Andover, Mass.) totaled five ground
balls apiece. Dinallo finished with 13 saves for the Bantams,
while Romanowsky notched a goal and two assists. Four
different players scored twice for Colby, including Donegan who
also assisted on a pair of scores.
