Hartford, Conn. - Sophomore attacker Caitlin Irvine
(Westwood, Mass.) notched three goals and two assists to
lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 12-10 win over the visiting
Wesleyan University Cardinals in New England Small College Athletic
Conference (NESCAC) women's lacrosse action this evening in a
steady downpour on Sheppard Field. Trinity, ranked No. 9 in
the nation, improves to 7-1 overall and 4-1 in the NESCAC with its
second victory in a row, while the Cardinals fall to 4-5 overall
and 1-4 in the league.
The teams played to a 6-6 tie over the first 30 minutes, before
Trinity used a 4-0 run over the first 12:18 of the second stanza to
break out to a 10-6 lead. Bantam sophomore midfielder
Rachel Romanowsky (Hampstead, N.H.) ignited the
spurt with a free-position goal 6:43 into the second half.
Trinity freshman goalie Stephanie Fisher (Brunswick,
Maine) and the Bantam defense held Wesleyan scoreless
until 17:54 remained in the game and to just one more goal to the
five-minute mark. Cardinals Maggie Lile (Wynnewood,
Pa.) and Laurel Sticklor (Boxford, Mass.)
scored late goals 1:34 apart to cut the lead to a pair at 12-10
with 3:43 on the clock, but Trinity held possession for nearly all
of the last three minutes of play.
Wesleyan led, 4-3, 13:48 into the contest, as junior attacker
Erin McCarthy (Ridgefield, Conn.) scored three
times in the first 7:06 of the game. The Bantams answered
with a 3-0 run, and Wesleyan scored twice in the last six minutes
before the break to account for the 6-6 stalemate at intermission.
Romanowsky and senior attacker Jesse Schultz (Troy,
N.Y.) each tallied two goals and one assist for the
Bantams, while sophomore midfielder Alisen Urquhart
(Redding, Conn.) scored twice, and Fisher finished with 13
saves in goal. McCarthy led all goal scorers with four, while
senior tri-captain midfielder Sarah Orkin (West Hartford,
Conn.) totaled two goals and two assists, and Sticklor had
one goal and two assists. Freshman Maggie Drowica
(Glen Head, N.Y.) made nine saves for Wesleyan.
