Waterville, Maine - Junior Christy Bradley (Wellesley,
Mass.) scored on a breakaway 5:03 into overtime as the No.
12-ranked Trinity College Bantams took a 4-3 win over the
Colby College Mules in the New England Small College Athletic
Conference field hockey opener for both teams this afternoon on
Bill Alfond Field. Trinity, ranked No. 12 in the nation, is
1-
Colby fought back from 2-0 and 3-1 deficits to tie the game with
just 3:17 left in regulation on the first collegiate goal by
Hannah O'Brien (Wolfeboro Falls, N.H.).
Heather Quadir (Medfield, Mass.), who had one goal
and two assists, had the assist on the play that started off a
penalty corner.
Trinity had a 3-0 advantage in shots in the overtime session and
forced Colby goalie Liz Fontaine (Wilbraham,
Mass.) to make two of her nine saves in the game. Bradley
got the winner when she received a long outlet pass a few yards
past midfield. She went in on Fontaine from the right side and was
able to get past her and ripped a low shot in the center of the
goal.
Bradley also scored the opening goal of the contest at 14:52 of
the first half when she tipped in a hard blast from senior
co-captain Carrie Wolcott (Hamilton, Mass.),
who had two assists in the game. The Bantams went up 2-0 just 5:08
later when junior Robyn Williams (Bulawayo,
Zimbabwe) had a hard shot from about 12 yards out in front
of the goal.
Ashley Wagner (Sudbury, Mass.) helped the Mules cut the lead to
2-1 at halftime when she tallied with just 7:13 to play. Quadir,
near the sideline, hit a ball that Wagner managed to tip slightly
on the run. Wagner and a Trinity defender kept up the chase after
the tip and the ball got past Bantam keeper
sophomore Gina Dinallo (West Hartford,
Conn.).
The Mules made it 3-2 with 25:16 left in the second half off a
penalty corner. Senior co-captain Meghan Saccone (Andover,
Mass.) smacked the shot off the penalty corner and Quadir
managed to deflect the ball past Dinallo. Dinallo had six of
her eight saves in the second half for Trinity.
