Hartford, Conn. - First-year Amy Schlueter (San
Francisco, Calif.) scored two goals, including a
game-winner in double overtime, to lead the Middlebury College
Panthers to a 2-1 win over the Trinity College Bantams this
afternoon in New England Small College Athletic Conference women's
soccer action on Campus Field. The Bantams fall to 0-1-2
overall and 0-1-1 in the league after their third double overtime
game this season, while the Panthers, ranked No. 5 in New
England, improve to 3-0 overall and in the NESCAC with their
second overtime win this season. The game was Trinity's home
opener.
Trinity scored their first goal of the season when sophomore
Leigh Howard (Bethany, Conn.) broke a 421-minute
Bantam scoring drought to put the Bantams on top 1-0 just under
seven minutes into the game. Trinity was able to hold the
lead until Schlueter answered late in the second half to tie the
game at 1-1 and eventually force overtime. In the second
overtime period, Schlueter netted her second goal of the day with
just 1:39 remaining in the game, after her shot bounced off the
bottom of the crossbar and straight down, barely penetrating the
goal line and giving the Panthers the comeback win.
Sophomore Lily Pepper (Princeton Junction,
N.J.) made seven saves and allowed both goals in 63
minutes of action for Trinity while junior Emily Weedon
(Wellesley, Mass.) made one stop and allowed no goals in
45 minutes in net for the Bantams, while junior Lauren
Torch (Bronxville, N.Y.) made nine saves to earn the win
for the Panthers. Pepper had played her first 209
minutes this season and 441 straight going back to last season
without allowing a goal before Middlebury tied it.
