Hartford, Conn. - Junior tri-captain forward Kim
Weiss (Potomac, Md.) and junior Emily Weedon
(Wellesley, Mass.) scored the game-tying and go-ahead
goals in the third period to give the Trinity College Bantams a 4-2
victory over the visiting Div. I Holy Cross Crusaders in women's
ice hockey action this afternoon at Williams Rink. Trinity,
ranked No. 5 in the nation, improves to 10-1-2 overall with
its seventh win in a row, while the Crusaders suffer their first
loss of the season, falling to 12-1-1.
First period goals by Nicola Garat (Princeton,
N.J.) and Stacey Hochkins (New Boston,
Mich.) put the Bantams in an early 2-0 hole, but Trinity
was able to string off four goals in the final two periods, started
by a second period power play score by sophomore Hannah
Harvey (Silverthrone, Colo.).
Weiss, last week's NESCAC Player of the Week after notching a
game-winning penalty shot goal against Middlebury in a 2-1 overtime
win on Fri., provided more heroics for the Bantams by scoring a
game-tying goal with just 9:31 remaining in the game. Less
than two minutes later, with 8:07 remaining on the clock, Weedon,
in just her second start of the season, netted her first career
goal to give the Bantams a 3-2 edge.
The Crusaders had late opportunities, but Trinity senior
goalkeeper Isabel Iwachiw (New York, N.Y.) came up
with 14 third period saves and the Trinity defense, led by junior
Laura Komarek (Plymouth, Minn.), sophomore
Dominique DiDia (Studio City, Calif.), first-year
Hillary McNamara (Milton, Mass.) and first-year
Britney Ryan (Highlands Ranch, Colo.), were able
to preserve the lead. An empty-net goal by Ryan with 15
seconds on the clock would give the Bantams a 4-2 lead, the
eventual final score.
Komarek collected three assists in the game, putting her among
the league's elite with 10 helpers on the season. Iwachiw
finished the game with 28 saves for the Trinity, and Holy Cross
sophomore Carly Dominick Sobol (Syracuse, N.Y.)
made 42 saves, allowing three goals in the contest.
Trinity will visit NESCAC rival Wesleyan on Fri., Jan. 15 at 3
p.m.
