Hartford, Conn. – Junior guard Ian Fels (Miami,
Fla.) had 15 points, all in the second half, and five
assists to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 64-59 win over the
visiting Connecticut College Camels in New England Small College
Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's basketball action this
evening at Oosting Gymnasium. Trinity improves to 6-6 overall and
1-0 in the NESCAC, while the Camels fall to 6-7 overall and 0-1 in
the league.
Fels gave Trinity a 48-46 lead on a three-pointer from the right
wing with nine minutes remaining, and the Bantams held the lead the
rest of the way but never had more than a six-point advantage.
Sophomore forward Jon Pike (Exeter, N.H.) and Fels
followed with consecutive baskets to give Trinity a 52-46 lead at
the seven-minute mark, but the Camels pulled within a point with
four minutes remaining on a drive by senior tri-captain guard
Shavar Bernier (Dover, N.H.). Fels drove from the
top of the key for a layup to give Trinity a 60-57 lead with 28
seconds remaining, but sophomore tri-captain guard Brian
Mahoney (Quincy, Mass.) quickly scored a Camel layup to
get the visitors back within one with 16 seconds on the clock.
Junior tri-captain forward Luke MacDougall (Baldwinsville,
N.Y.) calmly sank two free throws on the ensuing Bantam
possession, and a game-tying trey attempt by Mahoney rolled in and
out in the final seconds.
Pike joined Fels in double figures in scoring for the Bantams
with 14 points and added four rebounds, while sophomore forward
Demetrius Porter (Virginia Beach, Va.) led all
scorers and rebounders with 20 points and nine boards, and Bernier
scored 11 points including the 1,000th of his career. Bernier
becomes the 16th player in Camel history to reach the 1,000-point
plateau and now has 1,005 career points.
